Purolator Premium Plus gasket

I just picked up a Purolator Premium Plus for my '02 Nissan SpecV and I noticed the gasket is very flimsy and comes off easily. Has anyone had a problem with their Purolator Premium Plus leaking from around the gasket?

Comparing it to the gasket in the K&N, the K&N gasket was much thicker and secure in the filter.

I never in 15 years have had any problems with Ourolator filters of any kind. Gasket thickness is not an issue if the thickness is suficent. In fact a thick gasket will leak first in most high pressure applications.

I have recently had a problem with a PureOne oil filter that started to leak. I don't know if the gasket was defective or something else. I replaced with a Quaker State filter.

I noticed that the Purolater oil filters had flimsy gaskets. On several of them I pull the gaskets out with two fingers with very little effort. Still used them even though they had this problem. Switched last year to Wix filters. The gaskets on them don't come out. Wix seems to crimp theirs in alot better. Just my humble opinion.

The L40316 Purolator Prem Plus filter I use is a relabeled Mann W950/4 w/c is a very robustly German made filter..flimsy gaskets need not apply here.

I had a gasket fall off the filter on my last oil change, after filling it with oil. I shoved it back in the slot and installed it with no problems. Maybe they are getting a little sloppy with their manufacturering.

The last Purolator premium plus I bought had a couple of metal shavings hanging from the threads. Looks like it was not cleaned off when they tapped the threads. I hope nothing fell off into the filter.

The gasket is compressed between the filter and engine block when installed. So, there are two sealing surfaces: gasket to can, gasket to engine block. The force applied to the gasket is determined by the torque apllied while spinning the can on the block. Assuming no irregularities between the can and the gasket (rough surface) the seal on both sides of the gasket should be vitually the same.

I don't see how crimping it better (so it can't be easily pulled off) on the filter increases its sealing ability. The crimping does not seal the gasket to the can.


Then again, I could be wrong.

Turbochem, I'm just going off personal experience with the Purolator Premium Plus filters that I have used. Not saying their quality is slipping. They have always performed great but, when I pull a gasket out with this little bit of effort it tends to make me wonder. If this is not important, why then even bother even crimping the gasket in place? I'm staying with WI


Turbochem, I just noticed the gasket on the Purolator Premium Plus filters. I took another one just recently and shook it with the gasket facing down and it just fell out. Why even bother crimping a gasket in place? Theres a purpose to everything. As far as the filters themselves, I still think their a great filter. I switched to WIX and staying with them. With my employer discount through the State of Kansas I only end up paying about $2.40 a piece per filter.

I think the crimping is just to hold gasket in place until the gasket is making full contact with the engine block. Mainly needed for horizontal thru threaded side down applications. After that you're relying on the thin layer of oil that you apply to the gasket to keep the gasket from buckling.

I've never had a gasket fall out on a Prem. Plus or PureOne while examining them in the store.

Why does it matter if the gasket falls out... When it is installed on the engine the filter is pressing it against the engine!

The gasket can't fall out when it's screwed on. The crimping is simply to hold it in place. I've never had a gasket problem with ANY brand.

Exactly. I'll add that most people need to be worried about ovetightening a filter and creating a leak that way rather than the gasket itself causing a leak.

I should rephrase that. I haven't had any gasket problems OTHER THEN overtightened filters.

The manual says my filter should be torqued to 11-15 ft-lbs. I'll keep an eye on it.

Next time you buy one check the gasket to make sure it's secure or if you didn't notice a problem with it until you went to install it take it back. Either way let someone know, that way the problem gets resolved. Could be a quality control or manufacturing issue. Purolators are one of the best filters for the price.

As long as the gasket doesn't actually fall off before you get the filter installed, I don't see a problem. Myself, I would go with AC if anybody except the stealer stocked the weird numbers I need.
