This filter only had just over 1200 miles on it. My engine started making a ticking/rattle sound upon startup so I replaced it with a MC FL-400S. So far so good.

I doubt it was the PureOne, and by the looks of the guts there was nothing going on with it to cause a tick. Did you inspect the ADBV carefully to see if it wasn't sealing well on the base plate or leaking somehow?

I thought you also got start-up ticks in the past with the MC filter too (?). If you are getting ticks with more than one filter, then it's probably something else going on.

Agreed...even though I've gotten a startup tick with Purolator.

A 0wxx oil will help at startup.

Before cutting it open I did notice the ADBV was kind of offset to one side of the holes. I didn't think it was that bad so I didn't take any pics.
At about 88K miles I did an OCI with MS5K and a FL-400S filter. I was getting a tick/rattle about every 4th startup. Prior to that I had only used MC oil with MC filters.
I did a OCI with Castrol SynBlend and a MC filter and all was good. Every FL-400S I have used since then has never given me any problems, or even before that 1 time.
Maybe it's the oil causing the noise? Time will tell.

1200 miles is no torture test of any filter, but this one looks solid to me. For P1 though 1200 mi. is nothing.

As said before, based on previous postings of other filters used producing start up rattle, seems said engine is a bit finicky.

Thanks for the pics.

Prior to this 4.2 V6 F150, I owned 2 other F150s with the 4.2 V6. One is still running strong with over 240K miles on it (friend owns it now) and the other one, I have no idea where it is. My Ford tech friends had told me to always stay with MC oil filters and MC plugs. I learned the hard way with the plugs (another story

) and am learning this also with using oil filters other than a MC.

Looks good of course you can tell it wasn't ran very long.

PureOnes have been one of the worst offenders for start up noise on my Jeep, it makes no sense to me but it is what it is so I'm not all that surprised. Every time I tried one I had to eventually give up and go back to an FL-400s, which always fixed the problem permanently.

As always, thanks for cutting and posting!

Just to clarify my previous post, seeing as several different brands of filters on said engine experienced a similar start up rattle issue, saying the P1 is solely responsible is not possible.

I've used many P1's (and other filters) on both Hondas and Toyotas and never experienced any rattle issues. Clearly some engines are much more prone to start up rattle than others.

When my son owned a 4.6L Explorer, he once had a quik lube filter installed and it had a rattle for that 5k mi. oci. Switched back to the FL820S, rattle gone. Never used anything other than the MC after that. If it ain't broke....

I am a big fan of the FU but would not wish an OCOD on my worst enemy.
From here on out it's only a MC FL-400S on my engine.

The Tough Guard isn't an OCOD. I think its a better filter than the PureOne. The Tough Guard media is a synthetic blend.

Sorry. SCOD (Silver Can Of Death). Anything FRAM other than the FU is a COD (Can Of Death)!

You don't really believe that do you? The Tough Guards are really nice filters, and not keeping up with the ever evolving technology of oil filters would be a silly.

If the TG were orange I could use it with the OCOD for sighting in my scope.
I do have a can of safety orange spray paint.........
