Just picked up 6 pure ones from AAP. Upon getting home and inspecting them I noticed a heavy over spray of the yellow non slip substance on and around the oil inlet holes. Was thinking if the oil removes this stuff it will get caught in the filter media before getting to my engine. Should I keep them or return them?

There are ways to get that stuff off but you shouldn't have to do that, take 'em back, I wouldn't want that grit in my engine...that is why we use a filter. Sloppy.
I don't think I have that on mine, got 4 from Amazon. Will double check in the morning.
I got 4 last week and they were fine. The 6 I got today have it. Very sloppy to release these to the public. What happened to the QC on these?

edit:a reply came back re: the coating. It is actually pulverized macaroni in a dried mustard sauce, so no actual internal engine damage can be realized.

I totally agree! I clicked on the email contact on their webpage and this popped up, [email protected]. So is this to say that Bosch owns Purolator?

Just sent an email and received an out of office reply. Let's see what happens tomorrow. I'm cleaning them off now and they are coming out pretty good.
Has anyone ever tested if the coating breaks down? I tend to see a couple flakes on the filters but nothing real bad that a rag with some oil on it can't pick up. I would think purolator would have responded to this by now.
I've had a couple with some flecks. When I took the filter off 3k miles later it was still there, compared to the original pic I took. It's still not proper in my opinion for purolator to allow this, I'd certainly sign a petition or something.
I got it all off with some oil on a q-tip and a small brush. But I shouldn't of had to do that. I'll keep them for the sale price I got them at. Got all 6 for $20.98 minus the $12.00 rebate so $8.98 total. Not bad at all.... After these are exhausted I will try another filter. I still have some Amsoil with the Royal Purple oil filter to go through.

True ... shouldn't have to clean them, and yes, it's sloppy work.
BUT ... chances are there will be some degree of over spray on most of them. I just learned to clean them up ... in the long run it's just simpler and less hassle. Takes about 5 min to do.
1) Remove the gasket from the groove.
2) Spay some carb cleaner on a Q-tip - NOT on the filter.
3) Whip over areas of over spray.
4) Repeat 2) & 3) until clean to your satisfaction.
5) Install gasket back into groove.
Sending emails to Purolator can't hurt ... might make them consider changing their grippy surface material application process.

Returned MC with white over spray specs to center tube. Have Chrysler Mopar sitting here with black over spray to gasket. I will still use the Mopar. The problem with over spray is the mist goes everywhere and it can't always be seen by eye. They have a painting issue and need to correct it. It shouldn't hurt anything I think, except for the grit they add to the filters with grip texture. These filters above are made by Purolator.
Well the grit is near the oil inlet holes so it will have to pass through the filter media to get to the engine. I cleaned them off pretty good so I hope what ever is left gets caught in the filter media.
I don't understand why they don't spray the canister open side down BEFORE assembly...
All of this would then be avoided, would it not?

Make sense to me but I guess because they want the lip of the top part of the filter colored also.

I honestly wish they brought back the glossy blue finish. Not only was it prettier, but had no over spray issues.

I agree, the inside of the filter is one of the best but the outside is one of the worst so go figure.
