I currently have a small supply of Purolator Premium Plus and Pure One filters. Another post here caught my interest abour Bosch owning Purolator so I called Purolator yesterday. They advised that Purolator does manufacture filters for Bosch in accordance with Bosch specifications and that Bosch oversees all such operations in terms of quality control. I specifically asked if Bosch uses Purolator media and was told that Bosch has its own specification for media. I bought some Bosch filters (BOGO - Buy One Get One Free) at CSK (Checker) and began to examine them from the outside only. The base plates appear absolutely identical to the ones used on Purolator Prem Plus's and the Pure Ones (all the same). It looks like it uses the same red ADBV as the PureOne. When I look inside at appears to use the same center tube as the Premium Plus which has bigger holes than the Pure One. I am going to take a few apart tonight to look at the media. If it has the same media as the Premium Plus than I probably will not buy the Bosch in the future because the Premium Plus filters from Purolator are $3 regular price compared tp $6 regular price for a Bosch. If they are Pure Ones on the inside than I may buy some more, especially while on sale. I will post pics tonight hopefully.

I was also wondering about the Bosch media in relation to the PP and P1. I agree, the ADBV on the Bosch looks identical to a Pure One. Thanks for doing this rn2fine.

I came to opposite conclusion on Bosch. I decided even if they are the same as the Purolator Plus as long as I can get them at 2 for 1 or $3 each at CSK I buy them oiver the $2 after rebate purolator at Pepboys as I do get the red adbv and I like have a second source for Purolators besides Pepboys based on how much better CSK handle rebates over Pepboys at present and in the last few years.

Don't even get me started over how much I think Pepboys runs the crookedest rebate game in the auto business.

How are you going to determine if the media is the same? Look and feel?

That's the problem, there's no way to determine if the media is the same, despite the fact that all other elements of internal construction are identical. So that's the only thing we DON'T know--if the media itself in the Bosch is the same as the Purolator Premium Plus, PureOne, or different from both. (I wonder the same thing about STP, SuperTech, AC-Delco Champion made filters)

A particle count would have to be used to compare them - same vehicle, same miles, same oil. The Bosch claims syn-blended media and that its "thicker" than "conventional" media. Sounds good in marketing speak.

I wonder if that syn-blend claim is old Bosch data - that's pre-Purolator acquisition???

I am not going to determine if it is the same. I said that I am just going to look at it. I am not a media expert nor do I claim to be. I am just looking to see if there are any similarities.

I just called Purolator again and asked them a follow-up question. I asked "in terms of performance is the Bosch Premium oil filter closer to the Premium Plus or the PureOne" and the rep stated "the Premium Plus". Interesting. I will post some pics tonight. I may need some help as I have never posted pics on this site before.

Oops, I did refer to my original post and I did say that if they were the same I would stick with the Premium Plus. My apologies. I have no way to determine if the media is the same as any other. As indicated above a Purolator rep described it as being similar to the Premium Plus in terms of performance. But the box has language referring to 98% efficiency and the PureOne uses the same language in its marketing. Again, my apologies.

I disassembled a Premium Plus, Pure One, and a Bosch Premium freshly bought BOGO at CSK. To begin, how do I post pics? Any help would be appreciated.

Here is what I have observed:

Shells - Appear to be all the same in every way except color of paint.

Base Plates - Appear all the same in every way.

Base Plate Gasket - The Premium Plus and Bosch appear to use the same gasket that is black in color (same markings, same thickness, same feel). The PureOne uses a red gasket that appears the same except that it is red in color.

Springs - The leaf spring that is located beneath the filter end cap inside of the filter housing appears to be the same for all three filters. The spring in the PureOne feels as though it may be slightly thicker and feels as though it may be slightly more difficult to compress.

Filter Media End Caps - Appear to all be identical.

ADBV - I do not have that much experience with identifying rubber vs silicone rubber. All three ADBV's appear identical in terms of design and thickness. The Premium Plus uses what appears and feels to be a black rubber ADBV. The PureOne uses a red colored ADBV that feels much like the black ADBV used in the Premium Plus. The Bosch uses a red colored ADBV that feels much more slippery and pliable than the others. The Bosch is a few months newer which may account for this.

Filter Media - The filter media is different for each of the three. The Bosch does not appear to use the media contained in either of the Purolators. The Bosch media appears to be thicker. Marketing written on the outside of the Bosch box states that it's media is 40% thicker than others.

Center Tube - The Premium Plus and the Bosch appear to use the same center tube. The PureOne uses a center tube with more yet smaller holes.

The Bosch appears to be substantially like a Purolator except that it's media appears thicker (likely different). I may do a used oil analysis particle count someday with a Bosch and will post the results. Being that they are BOGO at CSK I would pay $6 for two, but probably not for just one, especially when I can get PureOne's in my area for $5.

I will try to post pics once someone tells me how.

Thanks for the info. Bosch does state they use the Filtech media. Filtech makes some of the filters for Honda. It is a thick media, most likely filters well for cellulose, but makes me think it may be very restrictive as well. Don't know though. Good luck with the pics, I'd like to see them.

To post images, just type [.image]paste link here[./image] but take out the periods when doing it

just did that so it wouldn't try to turn my text into an image.

Guys, tried posting the pics in the test forum but am not having any luck. My wifes pc just dumped its hard drive so I will have to reload to my laptop. I can try again later today.
