I changed the oil in the lawn mower today, it is an '89 or '90 John Deere 185 with a Kawasaki 17hp single cylinder, it's about 500cc if I remember correctly.

I changed the oil last year after the start of the season, so this doesn't show the full year (and I know many recommend changing at the end of the season, I just never get to it until spring) but this is a minimum of 25 hours of use, maybe up to 50, I don't keep track. Either way is less than the manufacturer recommended OCI of 100 hours.

The filter is a Purolator L14477 and I had used Chevron Supreme 10W40. I can smell fuel in the oil but it doesn't seem to have thinned out much if at all.

I have five acres to keep up, when I mow it is a lot of mowing at slow speed since the ground is pretty rough. I don't keep track of hours spent, just change every year and call it good. This year I used Delo 15W40.

The ADBV was in good shape, there were no tears visible in the media, I wasn't able to pull the end caps off with normal pressure. This filter is way bigger than what the JD OEM filter is, but this fits just fine and I put another L14477 in today in it's place. I would imagine by looking at this that I could go two or three years on a filter without worry, but at $3.27 seems changing the filter every year is good insurance.

I had never cut open a filter before joining here, I like to see that things are shipshape.

Welcome to Bitog,
I have to say that i cut a number of the purolators open and i never saw such strait pleats on one of them they are usually very wavvvvy. That filter looks almost new to me, very odd.

And you must have the cleanest lawn mower engine ever because i don't see any dirt in that filter are you sure you did not mix up the filters? I see all your posts so far were about purolator filters. Im glad you are having such good luck with them.

I like the idea of the hour meter, had no idea they were so inexpensive. I'll have to look into putting one on there.

It is a pretty clean motor, I bought it used from a nursery that kept up on the maintenance and I am very nit picky on keeping things running, can't afford a new mower.

I run Purolator on a few things, have been using MC for the daily drivers based on what I learned here before signing up. Kind of anxious to cut into a FL400S after 7500 miles to see what it looks like. Never thought before now to cut them open and see what was going on.

I wonder if using the JD OEM size filter would make for wavier pleats? This filter is enormous for the job it has to do.

who knows if that wavy pleat thing they have does any damage i used them for many years on my own cars and the engines we build so we are talking thousands and never had a filter related total engine failure when the correct oil and weight was used we stopped using them when they started to tear and their quality went south in my opinion at least.

I have a smaller Deere of similar vintage with a Kohler engine. My filters also look clean-as well as the Rotella T6 oil. I'd say that says something about good air filtration and engines.
