I recently bought a purolator one oil filter and know the box I noticed it said Mann+hummel purolator llc. Anyone ever cut both open and see if they are the same?

Yup, Mann+Hummel is the parent company of several brands (Mann, Wix, Filtron, Purolator), most still have their own independent assembly plants, but as said, there is some sharing of filters in some production part numbers.(One of the most known is the current switch for Wix made filters for Hyundai/Kia spin on filters, they used to be a separate Wix made in USA product, but now appears to be made in the same plant as OEM Hyundai/Kia filters made by Mann in Korea).
To specific topic Puro v Mann, the Mann 'labeled' spin on filters made in US are very close if not identical to the equivalent Puro spin on filters, Red and/or BlueP1 filters. M&H took sole ownership Puro US 2013. Unlike Wix/Napa Gold 5/1334 crossover manufacture coo consolidation with Mann made Hyun/Kia OEM, not seen to this point with Puro US. With perhaps an outlier here or there, vast majority spin on still made US. No cross over of Wix/Napa Gold, XP/Plat to any PuroUS spin on seen to this point.
