As per my other thread about switching back to M1. I plan on changing my oil in about 30 minutes.

I have two filters to choose from:

1. Blue Purolator PureONE
2. Ford Motorcraft FL-820S

Let me know what you would choose and why!

Currently leaning toward the Motocraft because of the threaded-end bypass.

Age is sort of irrelevant here; I have six PureONE's and about 10 Motorcraft FL-820S's.

For winter maybe the Motorcraft and only because IF and i say IF there's any flow restrictions or BP activation worries you can run the MC witch looks like a good flowing filter with less thinner pleats.

Now mind you the PureONE appears to have more (taller) media in the can than the FL-820S. This is because of the height of the bypass in the threaded-end.... What are your thoughts on this?

I agree. Go with the flow, particulary, up there.

I normally use motorcraft on my Ford products just because they are very well built and are specially for fords!

Sorry I'm late.

Use the MC if your time/mileage is going to fall within the OEM specified limits.

Use the PureOne if you're going to exceed the OEM specified limits or use the filter beyond the OEM specified limits.

So, no the element goes down around the bypass valve and isn't shorter. Not by much if it is. Also more and closer pleats means more flow area, not less.

Interesting video, but they really didn't say much about the actual efficiency and holding capacity of the Motorcraft oil filters. It is however obvious that Ford likes metal end caps and metal center tubes.

I also see that Ford has even removed the "80% efficient @ 20 microns" statement they use to have on their websites. Now it just says: "Provides optimal capacity and efficiency". I don't know why Ford doesn't come out and say what their filters will really do.

I do like the way they have designed their base end bypass valve to not subtract any length from the media ...unlike the WIX and NAPA Gold filter which eat up some media length.

I've used both (a yellow P1) on my '95 Grand Marquis and I have been unable to detect any difference in performance. Have not done a used oil analysis with either. No start up sound issues etc. with the Pure One.

They're both good filters. I vote just start with one and alternate using them till they're all gone. Flip a coin if you can't decide.

When I used blue Pure Ones, in the 97 DOHC Neon, I got louder & longer valve train noise when compared to a regular Purolator or Wix. Since you're in Canada, I bet your winters are a lot colder than here! Based on that, IMO use the Motorcraft filters in cool-cold weather, & save the Pure Ones for summertime.

Well, figuring I'll be doing another change in December/January, I've stuck on the PureONE for now. If I get noise (doubtful, never had noise with a PureONE before), I'll switch to the Motorcraft.

Gary:

OCI will be 10K most likely. Then a used oil analysis. If it shows I can run it longer.... I will.
