Alan, Seeing how you do not know the history of this car why not drop a bottle of Auto-Rx in the oil and run it to 3000 miles! Flush it with a decent 10W40 or 15W40 for 1800 miles then go to Mobil 1 0W40. This way you do not have to try to clean up the engine with the oil. You will be starting fresh with a nice clean engine.

The most commonly available VW 502.00 rated oils around here are:

1. Mobil 1 0W-40

2. German Castrol Syntec (SLX) 0W-30

That's good advice JB but I want to see just how far Mobil 1 5W30 will take me in cleaning this engine.

So far I have put 300 miles on this interval with no oil consumption

(now it's gonna burn/leak now that I mentioned it

).
