Currently have pu in 09 Hyundai accent with 10000 miles. I drive to and from work 5 miles each way. On the weekends I do 30 hwy miles to and from the fishing hole at least once. The engine is a 1.6L dohc cvvt with 3.48qt of pu with a Hyundai filter. I will change it for warranty reasons as suggested by Hyundai. But warranty aside, what would you feel is a safe oci with this set up?

What ever your manual states since it would be DUMB to suggest ANYTHING else with 90,000 more miles to go before the warranty is NOT an issue.

Take care, Bill

Maybe a misunderstanding. I asked what you guys would suggest/opinion warranty aside. I said I'm changing the oil per the owners manual. Hence, no oil analysis do to short interval to really find out the max safe oci with this setup.

i would do an oil analysis at say 7500 miles and base it on that. I would say 10 but with that much short driving i'd check it at 7500 and see if you can go 10k.

With your situation it doesn't make sense to use an oil like PU.
Just use a good conventional oil.

I have to think at times oil sump/capacity has a lot to do with length of OCI, I think PU can handle extended drains, but not with 3.5 quarts of oil.. the oil can handle it, but your engine can't so to speak.. not that that's a bad thing because look at it in a pure economic way you have a lot of oil left over from a 5 quart jug if your purchasing this way, or just the amount you need to buy if purchasing by the quart..

Your short trips don't help, I would stick to a 5k OCI at max, not sure what your manual recommends. What does the owners manual say for your OCI severe, and normal ?

Yeah I thought about the small sump size too. The better half got me the ultra as a gift. All she knew was I used pennzoil. She must of thought oooohhh, I'll get that expensive pennzoil one to impress him. Love that woman! Oh and the manual states 3000 severe/7500 normal.

I will go longer than my warranty permits in my yaris. 5k on PU is a waste. And its not like they are going to know I went an extra few miles on my change. But hey Im not supposed to perform my own changes anyway.
