Proper Warm Up?

GlennC, it can easily take 15 minutes of driving for the oil to fully warm, close to 10 minutes for the gauge to start to move (starts @ 150 degrees). It normally runs at 200 degrees, sometimes up to 225 in hot weather. The water temp comes up quickly.

Car is an '01.5 S4. 7 quart oil capacity (which is one of the reasons it takes so long to come up to temp). Mobil 1 0w40.

my acura is one of the slowest vehicles i have ever seen as far as geting up to temperature goes. it takes 15 minutes of idling with the heat off in 5 degree weather to get the temp needle to move at all. 15 minutes of city driving only has me halfway to warm. it seems like the gauge visibly moves to warm once you get past a certain point. my last tank of gas got me a cellar dwelling 18mpg city driving. down from 27-29 in warmer weather.

My minivan used to be slow to warm up, but after a radiator flush it is great.

And as quoted elsewhere oil temps will lag behind coolant temps.
