Proper phone charging

Do whatever you want with the phone and charging. Phone is there to serve you not the other way around.

Batteries seem to last fine on iPhones depending on how much used. Daughters last about 3 years(charged 2 times a day) wife’s iPhone XR at 80% capacity after 5 years.

My iPhone 14 Pro at 91% after 1 year of heavy usage. I high speed charge daily once.
Exactly. Most folks keep a phone 2 years. Other issues crerp in long before battery issues...older operating systems, storage and memory issues, physical damage....etc...

I try to fully charge mine before bed. Then I just leave it sit overnight not plugged in. Always wake up with it still fully charged and depending on how much I use it depends on when I have to plug it in. Haven’t had any issues with my 15 Pro getting too hot while plugged in unless I’m using it at the same time.

the other school of thought is fast charge/qi charge it all the time in the first year, that way your battery will wear out and become defective=free battery change as the warranty runs out.
LOL

Fast charging will not kill your battery in 1 year.

My Pixel 5 is a little over 3 years old. I fast charge it almost exclusively, although I try not to charge it to 100%, unless I forget. According to AccuBattery, my battery health is still at 89%.

Just got a Pixel 7a 3 weeks ago. Excellent phone. Not all supposed fast chargers actually fast charge mine. None of my car fast chargers do.

i have no idea, because my personal mo is slow charging. I assume a corporation that warranties a battery has done the math and then allowed consumers to fast charge knowing the statistical probability for fast charging accelerated battery replacements is in the corps favor.

Google phones utilize a fast charging protocol called USB PD (USB Power Delivery). When buying a charger, you have to specifically look for that designation. Regular QC/quick chargers won't work.

I think a lot of people think they fast charge when in reality they’re not.
Yup.

Also, what exactly is fast charging? If 5W (5V @ 1A) is slow charging, is anything higher than that considered fast charging? I mean, charging with 15W is not the same as charging with 30W, even though technically they're both fast charging.

I remember the dumb trend kids tried where they thought you could charge your phone by putting it in the microwave like a decade ago.

I consider anything that puts at least 1 percent per minute as fast. 2 per min is very fast, anything beyond that makes me uneasy as it's gonna get to 100f at the minimum. I can go a whole day on 50-70%. And because of that i use a slow charger at night and haven't used any fast charger with my new phone yet. But my son bought me a new wireless charger for cyber Monday and i might just have it on it during the day and not charge at night. haven't unboxed it yet.

I posted a pic last week of my iPhone 12 mini. I bought it on Black Friday 2020 and it’s at 80% battery health. But I do things not in its favor like placing it on the patio table in the sun.

What is considered "fast charging"? The OEM charger can charge up my OnePlus8 from 20%s to just over 90% (I try to remember to unplug at this point) in about 30 minutes. It takes much longer if I plug into a USB port on my PC.

Oneplus/Realme/Oppo has completely different charging tech (VOOC) then PD / Qualcom quickcharge.
Apple Samsung and Google really need to step up their game. 20-30W is not enough going into 2024.

In my experience I have noticed very little degradation even after 2+years. 65-100W low voltage charging is where its at.
Avoid having the phone at 100% 8h every night should be good enough imo.

Apple has been really weird about it over the years. They claimed that the "best" power adapter to use was the one that was packaged with the iPhone, which for years was a 5W "cube" in the United States and other countries using a two-blade plug. However, they noted that it was acceptable to use more powerful power sources, such as a Mac or 10.5W power adapter (the limit at 5V). Then later versions could charge even faster with a USB-C to Lightning cable and a USB-C power source. All of it was within the specifications and in any case the device controls the charging current. Of course if it's a piddly power source that will be the limit.

My wife used the 5W "cube" that came with her iPhone 6s Plus. Once I let her use a 10W power adapter that came with an iPad mini and she was shocked at how much faster it was charging.
