Propane in upstate NY - $5.699 - Yowzers

Propane seems to have gone crazy high price recently. Got my tank filled for a house closing and it took 12 gallons and the price was $5.699.

Luckily my house is oil heat, propane is for the cook stove. And we have a countertop convection oven and electric tea kettle. So the burners are used but oven only for the bird at Thanksgiving.

Are you joking. My 20lb tank refills are $16 on a good day and $20 if I'm desperate and trade for a 20lb tank with 15 lbs.
20lbs is only 4.6 gallons.

edit: nevermind. I see that's the per gallon price. Retail for small volumes has been ~$3.50/gallon for me in texas for the last decade or two.

Yep, assuming that they sent a truck that would normally be used for much larger fills, and they probably had to drive several miles out to do the fill with the price of diesel fuel to bring a big truck out somewhere to only put in 12 gallons, I don't blame them for charging $6/gallon.

Makes heat pumps look much better if you heat with propane currently.

Are you locked into one company and a rental tank? They have different rates depending on how much you burn in a year.

I, too, have a tank for only my stove/oven, and I, too, pay more for delivered propane than I do for the 4.2 gallon/ 20 lb bombs the barbecue takes.

I bought my own tank. I will call the fuel company tomorrow. But if they use that price for the full 100 gallons I am ahead at closing tomorrow.

I know that grill tank fill ups or swap outs around here have risen about 40% this year. A local news Facebook group that I read had a thread on local propane heating costs about 2 weeks ago. It seems that it's the old, do you own your tank(s) or rent them from the supplier disparity. The current local costs reported 2 weeks ago ranged from $2.30 to $2.99 /gal., with most around $2.49/gal. Some of the worst tank renter gougers were at $3.69 and $3.99. I realize that 2 weeks could make a difference considering the shortages.

Does New York have additional home heating fuel sales taxes in some counties? No sales tax on home heating fuels; oil, coal, propane in Pa. We do have the highest road fuel taxes in the land though.

Just paid $4.08 a gallon here in northern Ohio. Ive got a 120 gallon tank that I own for heating my garage. Have been using the same supplier for the last 3 years but after calling around I will be switching. When I first got setup with them they were the cheapest but now they are the most expensive. I talked to another company and they told me 2.24 a gallon.

I topped off my 1000 gallon tank just for just under $1 a gallon last March. I don’t want to know what it is now.

I paid 2.35/gal for 275 gallons yesterday in SE Indiana just west of Cincy. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It was 1.70/gal when I filled it last April.

We have a 500 gal tank filled it in Aug for just over $1.25 gallon.

My story. First house ever with LP. Water heater and BBQ (beats small tank refilling big time) .........watching the graph.....like a gentle beautiful slope........November arrives........slope increases with heater use, but alas not bad as we have dual fuel system. Heat pump doing fine keeping the basal temperature.........then December....use the gas fireplace a bit......and whammo DEC 24 freeze from the Fraser river valley channel hits like a nasty ice spear. 1°F! Propane furnace REALLY fires up..............the graph looks like a cliff drop. Holy poop. We were using 3-5 gallons a day or so as indicated by e-gauge*. Then as soon as temperatures moderate, graph flattens back out. Fun to watch......may need to fill in April or ???

*I do wonder how much the temp influences the gauge reading. Maybe none. Not sure.

Propane is your aux heat source for your heat pumps?
I'm in the process of building a house and I want HVACs like that, thinking about buying a 1K inground tank.

It's dual fuel system.

I wanted forced air AC added in the stack because ducts and LP gas central air already in place. In the long run it made more sense to go with a heat pump and new LP heater.

I do wish we had a 1K in ground tank. I bet the permits here would be nasty.

My parents actually just purchased a wood stove this year, I'm going to help them out with getting wood for it. They have a 500 gallon propane tank, but they are locked in to one company. Recently the company put a little transmitting device on their tank, it lets them know when the needle moves on the gauge so they can come and add more. Seems like they are really milking these prices.

This is a good example of why I always advise my fuel oil customers to stick with fuel oil and or a heat pump air source if they're really looking to save some money in the shoulder season.

Fuel oil is much more stable in price, there is much more distributed storage, and significantly more elasticity in the National system then there is for propane. It is not uncommon that we have shortages of propane almost every winter and or Price spikes; very often the customers will have no idea that many bulk plants are completely out of propane.

Additionally there is usually no cost advantage propane versus heating oil, even accounting for the higher efficiencies of a propane Appliance and the potentially reduced maintenance of a heating Appliance versus fuel oil. This is because you will have to burn between 1.3 and 1.45 gallons of propane to every gallon of heating oil.

Propane pricing and potential shortages will continue to get worse. In 2010 this country exported almost no propane, currently we export more propane than we do distillates. Overseas propane has become a popular cooking fuel whereas here we'll use it for heating. This means that even poor people in poor countries are willing to pay more per gallon because they don't use very many gallons when it's just for a cooking stove.

I heat with wood but my back up is propane current price here 2.71 my tank is full and i don't plan on using it but it is not so bad. Many heat there homes with kerosene here and the price has jumped 5.99 per gallon.
A lot of people have been flocking to the air port to buy Jet A to use in there heaters since it is 3.99 right now.
