The one thing I really hate is a tap or die that cuts loose tolerances. I knew Hanson would come in 1st but I was surprised Craftsman came in 2nd.

I thought Vermont American would do better than it did.

What's your favorite brand for taps and dies?
My favorite is whatever work buys me. If they break I’m still paid by the hour to remove it. Not my dollar not my problem. I needed some left handed drill bits and they bought some Chinese ones off Amazon…one of the tiny ones is currently broken off in a $1600 compression cylinder and that’s where it will be staying.

Widia GTD (original Greenfield tap and die), Morse, Cleveland, Presto, Guhring and others. These are all high end tooling that produce very precise threads.

Edit: I forgot to mention HSS or HSS and coated taps only for cutting new threads, carbon steel is okay for thread chasing.

More brands I see recommended on machinist forums:
Keystone
Yamazawa
OSG
Emuge
Natchi
YG1

Union Butterfield, Morse, and Brubaker are my favorites.

...OSG, Cleveland and UB have been good for me...
I bought some OSG 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm taps, plug type, at Zoro (5pc for $53).

8mm OSG compared to a 8mm I pulled out of my old Hanson/Ace tap&die set.
