ARB1997 Yes! I bought a used Toyota Starlet that had 10X more sludge then that int he head. My uncle that one at least never changes oil he justs keeps adding to it if you are lucky. Usualy 12 months between oil changes at Jiffy lube driving 100MPH an hour to and from work! After useing a shop vack and a putty knife on the heads so I could see the rockers and push rods I used 1 bottle of MMO and Castrol 5W50 for 5 years. I changed the oil about 3-4 times a year back then because I was delivering Pizza's with that car in college so I was driving a lot. I was also useing 1 pint of B12 Chemtool at the end of each OCI. When I had to decarbon the pistons from my girlfriend leaving the choke on all the time I pulled the oil pan too. The oil pan was still so full of sludge that I must have gotten 10lbs.'s of sludge out of the pan with a putty knife. So if MMO was going to do anything on sledge I would imagine 5 years of useing it each oil change with what was at the time one of the best synthetics on the market would have done it.! MMO is really only good for two things keeping an already clean engine clean and doing mild cleaning on an engine that is just starting to have deposit issues.
The rest of the engine was clean. The head which I had hand cleaned with a puty knife, pencil and a shop vac was cleaned further by the MMO and B12 after I did the heavy cleaning by hand.
The nature of solvents is thus. If it is strong enough to do the job easily then you do not want it in the engine often or long because it might cause damage. If it is gentle enough to not harm the engine then it has limited cleaning ability. SInce MMO is safe to run every oil change it has to be a weak cleaner by default or it wouldnot be safe to run!
