The corporate money is the key component to today's sports franchises. Having Steve's Ace Hardware as a sponsor of a professional sports franchise worked decades ago, but not today.

Supplementally,on MACRO basis all the professional athletes want to play and live in the South and West.

Not if, but when these long time professional sport franchises move from the Upper Midwest and Northeast to the South and West.

They really like to play where there is no state income tax.

Perhaps but what you're forgetting is the stadium. Unfortunately public money is required and there are not many southern cities left who can float the bonds necessary to fund the construction of a NFL stadium. Think over $1.5B.

Right. The large population centers already have football: Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami, New Orleans. Where else in the southeast: nowhere to go. Market is saturated. But that is the NFL: all shared revenue and a salary cap makes every team competitive. The NHL is the same.

As much as I loath Chicago, there is no way any team in Chicago is going anywhere. Chicago fans will pay just about anything to watch their teams play, regardless of whether they are good or not. The Cubs went 108 years without a WS win and the stadium was still packed every year. Bears have only won 1 Super Bowl and are essentially a garbage team every year at the bottom of the league. Still the stadium is packed on game days. Unless the city burns to the ground the sports teams are staying there for the money.

If we’re talking about NHL ice hockey, 2 are original 6 and the other 3 cities were part of the first expansion. As far as Philly goes, we have the fan base and money to support all 4 sports franchises. We just can’t guarantee anyone’s safety and our real estate values are not good. A plus is you don’t need a license/registration/insurance/inspection to drive and limo tints are ok. Any city who has had a franchise move out 2 or more times, then imho it becomes a question.

It didn't used to be that way. Prior to the Tribune ownership, they usually had the upper deck closed unless there was a large-draw tream in town (Cardinals, Reds, Dodgers, etc). Jack Brickhouse used to mention the upper deck being open, like it was some sort of novelty.

I will only address the city I care about: The Steelers and Penguins are never leaving Pittsburgh: both are too much a part of the city and have been very successful: sold out stadium and arenas and good TV followers. There have been rumors about the Pirates for years but then it never happens. If the owner found a way to pay for a real major league roster and they started winning again, the Bucs would be very popular and more successful than now. They still draw some fans because seeing a game at beautiful PNC Park is worth it alone.

Here’s a difference thst I point out about “old” cities vs what was mentioned initially.

Your city is passionate about the Pens and ours the Flyers. We don’t root for one another because we’re both in PA.

My buddy lives in FL and as of late he is a die hard Bolts and Panthers fan, and said the Cup is where it belongs. In Florida.

I said you gotta be joking. I was in Tampa 2016 and in a bar and the playoffs werent even on. I asked why and was told we’re not into hockey. They win the Cup 2 more times and everyone is a hardcore Bolts fan. They decline and the Panthers rise, and now they switch? That’s the difference between fair weathered and old school. We don’t have that option nor do our pocketbooks.

Get the money to flip flop and you win. Why not buy the Yankees and the Mets or the Cubs and White Sox and get everyone to band together in a sign of unity?

This is about money, ladies and gentlemen.

Wasn't the Oakland Colosseum built in the 1960's & was shared between the Oakland A's & Raiders off & on for many years? I remember Raiders games with the diamond still visible on the football field (Looked low rent on television).

Just thinking about it some more, that just happened to be the last stadium to host both an MLB and NFL team with the overlapping seasons. That was the norm. Off the top of my head, that was the case in Cleveland (Cleveland Stadium), Baltimore (Memorial), Cincinnati (Riverfront), Pittsburgh (Three Rivers), Philadelphia (Veterans), New York (Shea), Miami (Joe Robbie), Seattle (Kingdom), Anaheim (Rams used to play at Anaheim Stadium), San Diego (Jack Murphy), St Louis (Busch), Atlanta (Fulton County), Houston (Astrodome), Milwaukee (County), and San Francisco (Candlestick). Then thrown in Toronto where the CFL played in the same stadium.

This was a Packers game at County Stadium in Milwaukee. They'd typically play 2-4 games a year there. They did try to place temporary sod over most of the infield dirt. But the warning track still cuts into the end zone, and there's a really tight fit at three of the corners.

I couldn’t care less if the Portland Jailblazers move out of Portland. I hope the new owners do it. Even that pencil neck NBA commissioner is saying now Portland needs a new arena. Guess who would pay for it? The city of Portland has enough issues that are put on the tax payer. I’m not giving some billionaire more of my money.

I hope Seattle never gets a pro basketball team back, either. Just one more thing to jam up our already stupid traffic.

I’m tired of hearing about it here in KC. Downtown, Johnson county.. even worse Wyandotte county. Royals have never been that great. Chiefs only with Mahomes and they got lucky there. Hopefully in my lifetime sports will get less and leas popular.

I've gotten the impression that given the opportunity, either team would have jumped ship at the slightest opportunity, leaving the other team in the Coliseum all by themselves. In the end however, they're both gone.

Earlier in the 2000s, there was a plan to move the A's to a new ballpark in San Jose, sponsored by (and named after) Cisco Systems. Ultimately, it was the S.F. Giants that sabotaged the move, citing an obscure agreement (probably dating back to the 1960s) that mapped out all of the Bay Area as either "Giants Territory" or "A's Territory", I assume based on broadcast TV coverage areas at the time. As it turns out, San Jose is in Giants Territory, so they they were able to block the move. I think the Giants just preferred the A's to stay where they wanted them, in the crumbling Coliseum.

The Eagles, Phillies, 76ers and Flyers aren't going anywhere...in 10 years or 40 years. Neither are any NY area teams or Boston teams. To suggest so is pure fantasy.

The big problem is the younger generations don’t care about pro sports. So as the current generation of sports fans pass on there will be no one to go anyway.

Nope. Not enough $$ in the Southern cities which don't have a pro team. College Football rules the South and Southeast.

You are right. Here in SC both Clemson and SC Gamecock football are more important than the Carolina Panthers. Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana are similar.

We have three dumpy stadiums that were built for the Spurs littered around San Antonio, and they want a new one again. One is the Alamo Dome which they keep dumping money into to have college football. Meanwhile all the streets around the city are constantly in construction and never finished.

I believe the Alamo dome was a failed attempt to get an NFL team here years ago. I watched the Alamo bowl last year and it is a very dated stadium, no way it is NFL caliber.

That was a gesture by the Haas Family that owned the A’s. It had previously been considered joint territory. The a hope was that the Giants would stay in the Bay Area. There had been talk that they might relocate to Vancouver or Tampa. Tampa had their stadium construction started before they had a team. I think there might have also been an agreement in place to move to Tampa, but that was after the voter measure was rejected.

That’s one thing that A’s fans hate, that a kind gesture (that at least delayed the relocation of the Giants long enough to assemble an ownership group) wasn’t returned in kind.
