Pro Honda HN4 4 stroke 10-40 Semi Synthetic oil.

Hey guys. I have a new Honda 919.Its ready for its first oil change got about 700 miles on it. Is the Honda HN4 semi syn oil up to BOBISTHEOILGUY commando's spec's to put in her. I can get it for about $6 a quart. Doing once a year oil changes. Going with an Honda OEM filter. Don't ask about me talking to the dealership about anything. I might call and ask them about a good fishing spot. But NO way in ---- would I call and ask them about motorcycles. Yea that bad. Thanks WarDawg

I think Honda oils are not very good. I recommend you give a HDEO a try. An example of a much used HDEO would be Shell Rotella 15w-40 or Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w-40.

I would go with a PureOne Oil filter and Delo 400 if you want a dino oil or Mobil 1 15w50 if you want an almost synthetic.

The Honda oil may not be the very best on the market, but it's not horrible. Take a look at this UOA:

Rick put 8K on the GN4, and that's their basic dino oil. It sheared down a bit, but the wear metal numbers were in line with the first two oils he tried.

There's a couple schools of thought on this oil thing, near as I can figure:

o If you're looking to save a few bucks but still go with good oil, go the HDEO oil, such as Rotella or Delvac or Delo. The 15W-40 Rotella can be had for $9/gallon at Wal-Mart; the 5W-40 synthetic for about $18. Lots and lots of success stories with this oil. I have the 5W-40 in my Goldwing right now.

o If you're looking for a good synthetic that's also JASO-MA, then Amsoil or Mobil motorcycle oil is pretty darn good. Pricey, though. But good. I've used Amsoil 10W-40 in the past was perfectly happy. But I like changing my oil every 3K to 4K miles, so it didn't make a lot of sense for me to pay for it.

o If you're looking to avoid all concerns about oil and warranty and all that ... then go with the Honda OEM oil. It's perfectly adequate oil.

I own a 919 and have tried several oil in my bike.
Honda filter is hard to beat and if I were you stick to honda oil (for warranty) or valvoline mc specific. Right now I am using M1 which I am still looking into. I switched to M1 when I had 2500 miles on the bike and have used it several hundres miles so far. I liked the valvoline smoothness in engine and tranny better but M1 is really an oil to be beaten up in hi rev. 919 runs effortless and smooth near red line with M1.

The GN-4 is conventional mineral oil.
The HP-4 (either w or w/o moly) is the blend.
Honda doesn't offer a synthetic oil for street bikes.

Actually, they do now. It's Honda HP4S, and it's a 10W-30 synthetic. Pricey, though -- $9.50/quart at my dealer. That's nearly $40 an oil change for me.

No thanks.

And here's why I use HDEO -- for $10 a change (or $20 if I go with the HDEO synthetic) I get a very good oil for 1/4 (or 1/2) the price.
