One change I noted from the Gen 1/2 to Gen 3 was that oil was allowed to leak into the motor area, the idea being to reduce friction by removing the seals.
With all the state-of-the-art engineering that has gone into this drive system, there is no reason to question the oil recommended by Toyota and worst, think that us mere mortals on a message board would somehow know better.
