Prius c: why 9.5gallon fuel tank?

When you average 50 mpg, a 9.5 gal tank should still get you almost 400 miles. This is more than sufficient for most conditions.

That size tank is ridiculous, and would be a deal breaker IMO. Yeah, I love stopping for fuel.

If you're that worried about weight, just put 1 gallon of gas in it, and make even more stops for fuel, if that makes you happy.

And make sure your body fat % is below 5, never take a passenger with you, remove all other seats in the car/upholstery, etc. Please....

Since most people have no clue how to calculate gas mileage and base it on how many miles they do on a tank, it only makes sense to put a small gas tank in the Prius. Just imagine the horrors if people found out that their hybrid costs the same to fill up as a regular Civic or Cruze. Like someone already mentioned, it's about bragging rights, or in other words, perception. Huge gas tank just doesn't give that perception of fuel saver.

My Jetta has a 14.5 gallon tank, but the can be filled to the brim for about 17 total. I routinely put in over 15, have put in 16 on occasion... That gets me a good week and a half of commuting.

I like vehicles with long legs, my truck has a 33.5 gallon tank, and I'm tempted to buy an aftermarket 42 gallon tank for it.

Getting gas is a waste of time.

My buddy drives the same vehicle - 2010 Vibe with the 2.4L, and he HATES how small the tank is, and how often he has to fill it.

If you're only getting 350 miles out of 9 gallons of fuel in a Prius, then something isn't right. I see on Fuelly most people average around 47-48 mpg. 9 gallons x 48 mpg = 432 miles. That's a fairly standard and decent cruising range, IMO. My wife's C300 needs to be filled up every 300 miles, LOL.

It's a 9 gallon tank in the new Prius c. Not the regular "full sized" Prius, but the newer, smaller one. They chintzed out and made the fuel tank smaller. Ergo, I figure, one would only run about 7 of those 9 gallons out on a regular basis (pure swag, mind you). Initial reports do seem to favor 50+mpg, perhaps 55mpg, so, I guess more like 385miles. Maybe one could eek out 400miles on a regular basis--not too shabby, but not quite TDi territory.

I read an article about how they design the Prius c, and they said the roofline and the chassis size dictate the space it has. So in order to still have a usable trunk / hatch it has to fit both the battery and the tank under the rear seats, so it gets the smaller battery and the smaller gas tank.
