Bought a new Epson XP424 printer this week .In the manual they recommend only Epson ink cartridges . My question is do you think aftermarket cartridges are ok or is Epson mainly trying to get sale for their ink cartridge?

I have an Epson IJ. If you get non Epson ink it will give an error message some times. Frankly buying Epson ink from their website is not all that more expensive than cheap ink somewhere else.

Ink & toner cartridges are big profit items. I had a monotone Minolta laser printer that detected if you refilled the toner yourself and slowed the print speed down as a punishment.

Too late, it`s installed already .

I see ink quite a bit cheaper on ebay than the Epson web site . Aftermarket is quite a bit cheaper. This new Epson has Wi-Fi although I think I`m just sticking to the USB hook-up.It has a black and 3 color cartridges . Buying off the website those full set of cartridges would cost about $15 less than I paid for the printer itself. Got the printer at Wal-Mart for $50 on rollback. The different web site over all give it good reviews .

I know with my Canon ink-jet, you can use aftermarket ink and bypass all the error message mayhem, thanks to the power of the interwebs.

Printer manufacturers are in the business of selling ink. The printer is there just to start the cycle.

After market ink or cartridges will probably void the warranty. In some printers a leak will fall onto the circuit board and that will either cause problems and at least be difficult to cover up in a future warranty claim.

There are always ways to take a shortcut. It's up to you to decide.

Epson has a new ink jet printer (not cheap) that you refill with containers of Epson ink. Its in this months Consumer Reports. This is not the process of refilling ink cartridges with ink off EBAY.

I have a color laser and a BW laser. The BW laser gets used most of the time.

Most of the time people can use BW.

If your printing checks, then laser is more secure.

I use outlaw ink in two different canons and have never have any problems.

I have a refurbished Epson WF-2520 from Epsom website. For 1.5 years been using Ebay ink tanks at about $2.00 a piece. Prints fine. No leaks. It does nanny a little when you put in a non-OEM ink tank letting you know it can tell the difference.

That being said it seems each new model incorporates more measures to ensure you buy OEM ink. Maybe a internet search will give model details.

interesting topic. I have an HP printer. I paid 45 bucks for two black ink cartridges. I do not print alot. after 60 days of the cartridge sitting in the printer, it's almost dried out. I printed maybe 20 sheets of paper. My wife was gonna drop another 25 dollars for another cartridge. I rather buy me a new laser printer and toss this one in the trash.

Truth is you just never know. Over the last couple years I have sold 8-10 Brother all in one printers to clients. Bonus was factory ink was reasonable, and aftermarket ink carts seemed to work really well. Something changed about 6 months ago as aftermarket carts just don't seem to work anymore. I think the OEM cart manufacturer changed something. Firmware never changed.

Some aftermarket carts work fine. I have an old Epson R260 that I keep around for emergency photo printing, or for the rare DVD/CD printing. Been running on the same set of refillable carts for 6-7 years.

Same here... this is the last ink jet printer I've bought. cartridgesfail way before they're empty, though I only use original cartridges. HP officejet J5780 in my case.

I have Costco refill my Canon and Epson ink carts (some up to 9 times) and as long as they reset the chip they work great!

The refills do last longer than the OEMs and I can' notice any difference in anything I've printed.

Yep toss it in the trash. Inkjet printers have never worked out for me.

I have a cheapo brother HL-2140 mono laser printer that I bought for $49 about 3-4 years ago.

Prints fine. Aftermarket toner cartridges from ebay are like 12 bucks. I buy one a year and we print a lot.

I had to replace the drum recently and I think that was under 20 dollars.

I don't even recall having a jam with this printer.

Toner never dries out, never have a problem like that.

Dell and Samsung make a similar quality monochrome laser printer that is under 100 bucks everywhere.

If you get one, consider one that you can print to wirelessly so that you don't have to setup your desktop computer as a print server to the other clients.

I print in color. Period, end of story. It is 2015 and I want to see the colors. It's not 1985 where the B&W dot matrix did the printing!

Had an HP Color Laserjet 2000 series. Carts were $100 ea and lasted ~2500 pages. So $400 for a set.

I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500a, Carts are $40 ea for the XL versions or $160 for a set. They last about 1/2 to a year and about 2k pages each. They make a non-XL for $30 ea that lasts less than 1/2 the pages.

I've tried Costco for the refills and can tell a difference. The printer also gets cranky when you use them. Like needing you to press buttons for every print. They were a bit cheaper but not worth the hassle. I could also see the difference especially with text.

Moral of the story is use genuine ink and buy the XL versions.
