This deck is from a five year old Murray M175-42. My cousin who owns it doesn't have much money so I'm just having her buy the parts and not charging any labor. Got the engine running great, now just to put new spindles/blades and clean up the deck. Should I prime/paint it, and if so whats good stuff to use or should I just fluid film it and send it?

I have tried all kinds of paints coatings etc. None hold up. Wont hurt to paint it, but it won't matter.
First power wash it if possible. Second, use naval jelly to neutralize the rust. Third Arnold mower deck spray. Not sure whats in it but after a good coating nothing sticks to my mower deck. I'd also look into replacing the blades with gator blades, it's the best investment that I did with my mower. They are made in the USA and cut grass significantly better than any other blade I've used plus they keep their edge significantly longer.
jenolite rust converter to start, then paint with whatever you like, such as rustoleum. The Jeno-lite will "convert" the rust and make it last a little longer. Also makes the paint stick as well. But your on borrowed time still.
After using a rust converter, I wonder if using a bed liner material under there would help. Sure it would wear off over time but it might take quite a while.
I've never had any luck protecting a deck. Mine erode through over time. Florida sand is hard on things. I have a 2" hole to patch today.

Maybe try the lanolin based type of under coating such as:

Yes, expoxy paint, bediner coating, graphite impregnated paint, rubberized undercoating spray.
None lasted anytime at all, and i'm not in a sandy environment. Small sticks and leaves sweet gum balls in the fall.
