Hello everyone, I am currently rebuilding the motor in my 1998 Prelude Type SH because the rings went bad and I am doing a lot of research on oil because after I break in the motor I want to use one type of synthetic oil and one only. I have done my research and I think I am going to use Redline 0w30 because the h22 motor is notorious for burning oil and Redline has a pretty good flash point and a low % of sulfated ash. I am going to use this unless someone else can change my mind.

I was wondering what filter will be the best, I was thinking of going with either the Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter or maybe the K&N filter.

I am also planning on maybe setting up a bypass filter in the future for this car also.

Any questions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

When I think best filter, the 3 that come to mind are the Amsoil EAO, Fram Extended Guard or Royal Purple. Take a look at those 3 filters.

That is strange, I will probably never use a Fram filter because I have always seen them as a cheap filter. I will definitely throw the AMSoil filter into the line up when I am doing my research though.

dont forget the bosch distance plus its a very good filter.

(red line is one of the best syns around. why would i want to change your mind)

Well I did my fair share of research into oil's and I was just testing out to see if there was any other oil that might do better than the Redline in my H22, seeing if anyone has some evidence that another oil might be better.

And thanks for pointing out the Bosch filter

I think you are quite mistaken and you need to do a little more research. The Fram Extended guard is an excellent extended drain filter, as the previous poster had suggested. The Extended Guard is not the same as the so called, OCOD, but instead is a high quality filter in all aspects of design and filtration.

Do a search on BITOG for this filter and better yet....make a trip to Auto Zone and take a look at this Fram filter. You will be surprised at what Fram can put out on the market, when they want to show quality filters. Too bad they don't make them like this for the Extra Guard or the Tough Guard line.

Thanks for opening my eyes, I guess I have to do some more research and open my eyes. Although I do not plan on having extended drains, I am going to change my oil every 3-4k miles so I would rather have one that filters really good for 3-4k miles rather than one that will keep filtering for 5-7k miles.

If you are looking for a filter for only 3-4k miles, Pure One is the most logical filter. Especially when AAP has them on sale online and you can use the online discount codes and stock up on them.

Regarding the Fram Extended Guard, do a bit of research on that filter and look at the inner construction of it and compare it to the best of the best and see what you think.

Regarding the OCOD Fram, I wouldn't even recommend it for a car that was on its way to the crusher.

I'm running PP 5w30 (well now PP 10w30 as I had a few bottles kicking around) and Bosch Premium filter (I believe this is a Pure One rebadge) in my Lude.

No problems with it, consumption of my h22 is on the low side, half a litre(qt) every 5000KM. The motor as 216,000 KM on it currently and its driven hard.

IMHO I don't think the H22 warrants pricey oil, it does well on the cheap stuff unless you are planning on tracking this car a lot. My vote is for Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 and good filter (Pure One, Bosch distance plus, wix etc...) Don't extend the oil changes thoe as with many Honda's it does run rich and thus fuel mix in the oil is common.

Well mine is going to be around 250 horse or so and will have about 4-5 grand into the motor and I will be taking it to the track so it is going to get good oil

IIRC, that Honda is known for oil consumption as a result of its cylinder wall construction and its low tension rings, the better to rev high.
Other than that, it is a Honda engine.
I think that a P1 oil filter would serve you well.
I doubt that you'll be extending the drains on this engine, so you probably don't need to consider anything more costly.
WRT oil, will this engine ever heat any part enough that Redline is required?
I doubt that it would bring lower oil consumption, unless evaporation is really a factor.
This is a hi-po Honda, after all.
A little oil consumption is part of the package.

Very true, I was just thinking Redline may be a little overkill for 4k oil changes, I may end up just going with a Valvoline, Pennzoil, or Mobil 1 Synthetic oil. And I am probably going to be revving it to 8k maybe even 9k now that I have some goodies in the motor

I have owned a 96 VTEC Prelude since new. Have used just about every filter and oil, usually synthetics. The Fram XG has worked well, as it has on multiple other vehicles of mine, foreign and domestic.
Maxlife and Schaeffers 9000 have probably been my favorite oils.
Nothing will totally stop oil consumption on these engines, though.

I know, at least if I decide to use a cheaper oil then topping it off wont cost so much.

Incidentally, I drove a '94 Accord EX (VTEC) from SW Ohio to Coeur d'Alene in April 2006.
Car was like new, having been bought new by my parents, and it actually turned 100K driving through Wisconsin on the way northwest, having been used at a pretty low rate throughout its life.
One of my sisters still has the car.
