In jonny's post, he showes the example of HLPA then the batch number. Today at AAP, I saw a marking of HLPV and HLPW, what do these mean? Are they the same exact formula as the ones for the HLPA? Better or worse?

I just got an email from a tech friend of mine that confirmed that all Platinum is made at the Houston Lube Plant (HLP). He said he did not know why the different codes on the end (A, V, W). So, it's only one formula and one plant that is making the Platinum product.

So rest easy, all is well.

Just thought I would bump this back up since 309 people looked at it. Just want to be sure everyone had a chance to see the answer.

Here's something interesting I noticed while changing oil last week. I used two quarts of PP 5w30 with HLPA both had a dark brown residue at the bottom of the bottle. If I shook it up it would disolve in the oil. The other 3 quarts were coded HLPV and did not have this issue. Any ideas?

Guys this is called additive dropout the longer a bottle sits the more residue you will fine. Thats why i would not use an oil that is over two years old.

From a buddy of mine in Houston............
Hello you old crazy XXXXXX,

Basically, the first four letters refer to the location of the plant and the blending tank.
HLP refers to Houston lube plant and the 4th letter refer to the name of the tank that blended that batch.

Quick update from Houston...intresting.....
Hello you knucklehead,

Just a correction, on the coding.

HLPA is the identification that the product was manufactured in Houston.
HLPV tell us that there may be a small amount of imported based oil that was used. Formulation remains the same.
The HLPW may have been a mistype. it may be HLPVV making it look like a W.

wonder how old these bottles of PENNZOIL Platinum priced at $2.90 a qt. at Advance Auto w/ the HLPA and HLPV markings could be ? Currently have 13 of the bottles w/ the HLPA stamp ( the ones stated to have brown residue ) and 12 of the HLPV bottles . Hate to have these bottles in waiting to get less spirited . Should all us PENNZOIL Platinum stockers be concerned ?

Makes yeh wonder if $2.90 is really such a great bargain , if its shelf life is short lived .
