power steering fulid

today i changed some of the power steering fulid in my 97 civic.. I used the turkey baster to suck about 24 ounces of fluid and replaced it with two new honda bottles of honda fluid. the fluid came out very black.. I will buy a few more bottles tomorrow and finish changing the fluid till its all clear, the car only has 36,000 miles

As you have learned PS fluid needs to be replaced on an on going basis. I draw out with a turkey baster, fluid every oil change so the fluid always stays fresh. Also I do that with the brake fluid as well.

You use turkey baster to change brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir ? How do change brake fluid in the brake lines ?

well for the brake lines i bleed them from right from the caliper

Even though there is no pump the fluid will slowly move through the system. I've been doing this for 40 years and the fluid always stays clean even at the wheels.

i always wondered about that. I have changed as much brake fluid as i can with a baster at the master but wondered if it migrated to the wheels. You say it does?

i guess thats easier than doing each calipar and taking each wheel off, just for note the power steering fulid was a lot dirtier than the brake fluid

Yes it will get much clearer, but probably not perfect. It may take several times. I do this to my parent's van and they noticed a difference after just one time (about 16oz or 1/2 quart).

At least for Fords, I think this is actually a better method than a full flush, as long as you stay on top of it.

I didn't, and did a full flush around 70K. After about 3 weeks of driving, there was still some air in the system. I ended buying a PS reservoir cap and making my own vacuum tool to get the rest of the air out of the system--finally.

Your method certainly avoids that hassle, and is probably what I'll do from now on.
