Pouring 5 gallon HDEO buckets

My attitude about oil belongs largely in the "Product Rebates, Sales and Promotions" section so don't get bent out of shape. If there is a whole section devoted to cheapskateism then I have every right to post here or at least somewhere in this forum.

I stopped buying 2.5 gallons of Traveller oil to save myself money and instead decided to go with 5 gallon pails. Sure feels like that was false economy.

Now I have to go buy a pump or tool that costs me as much as the pail?

How many oil changes will it take to pay for that pump? Sheesh!

I guess the concept is for folks/companies/fleets who do lots of oil changes then?

Enlighten me. I don't like spending any more on things than I need to spend on than I have to so that I can spend on things that I would rather spend on. Plus accessories like this are just one more messy item to store and space in my garage is really at a premium.

Thanks.

Go buy a dollar store measuring cup and pour it into the old 2.5 gal quart by quart into a funnel. Once the bucket is half full you can more easily pick it up to pour it in directly. After that no more buckets.

Consider lowes sold mag 1 15w-40 the 2.5 jugs are 27.99 for 10w-30 and 29.99 for the 15w-40 with free shipping that's pretty quick. The buckets cost the same per quart and even though i have a pump i'm too old to lug buckets around without injuring my back and i don't want to make the poor delivery driver which is sometimes a woman have to lug a 5 gal bucket. The 2.5 gal feels way lighter and easier to carry than a 5 gal.

They raised the price by 19 cents? how odd but at least it wasn't more. It usually says out of stock but comes right back and ships fast.

Find yourself an empty 1 gallon or 5 quart oil jug. Fill the smaller container from the bucket then use it to transfer to the vehicle.
Seems logical. I have at least one jug from the last oil change. Still seems very messy though and hard on the back.

Yeah not the case for Traveller at TSC. Used to be the same price per quart for the 2.5 gallons but they are running a promo...probably due to too many aging grumps like me. Maybe I need to switch brands then.

Get the 550 ml syringe and call it the day. One round with the syringe gets you a bit over .5 qt of oil sucked in.

You are welcome.

Yeah, I buy the 5 gallons when the rebates force me to. 😄
I've poured 5 gal buckets into the truck & it isn't fun.

May be obvious to some of you but don't buy one of those D battery Harbor Freight suctions. They don't work, ask me how I know...ha! Oil viscosity is too much for something that weak. A low cost 12v transfer pump should be a good option though. Hook it to your auto battery & slip the ends where they below then flip the transfer power on. Just don't overfill!

Otherwise, the rest of us just transfer to smaller jugs.

To get it to a smaller container I just used the same $12 - $20 oil change pump from Amazon I use for MB oil changes. You'll notice the same pump sold under different labels for different prices. The one I used for clean oil got cleaned out and used for filling transmissions. They last for 10 years or so.
I use a jump box for power.

Your paint store will have a 1 gallon graduated bucket.

Or as mentioned just get a couple 5 quart emptys and pour into them.

If your not up to lifting 40 lbs then I get it, but just buy smaller jugs. Pumping not worth the trouble unless your going through a lot of oil.

Thanks dudios. This thing had a small popout spout which helped. I was able to pick it up one last time in my life and toss it into an empty 5 quart Castrol Edge Euro jug 3 times in a row that I use for my MK4 ALH TDIs. It was difficult at first like stated but TBH less messy than other parts of the oil change.

Thanks for all of the thoughts "prayers" and ideas!

That traveler's stuff is made by Warren which makes super tech and mag 1. Mag 1 is Warren's retail brand so you're buying it direct from the blender.

Thanks. I had no idea. I thought it was some level below Warren/Mag 1 which I had used many years ago in my speed demon machines with no issues.

If OP or anyone wanted to go over kill, or goes through a lot of buckets.

We (my company) picked up distribution of these last year: https://www.macnaughtusa.com/collec...ttery operated barrel pump&utm_content=BOP-OT

(not trying to sell them.)

They’re actually really slick.

Other wise, 5 gallon pails suck. Most products are available in 6 gallon bag in a box, cheaper than pails from a distributor. Pails are just awkward to handle and heavy. A lot of good suggestions here though on how to break it down to manageable amounts.
