Pour points....

I was perusing the Chevron technical data pages at their site and noticed that there isn't a helluva lot of differnce between the pour point of their 5W20 Supreme and just straight Delo 30 weight.

I can get the straight 30 weight Delo at my local stores. I had hedged on using that oil through the winter because I feared it wouldn't readily pump when it gets below zero F outside.

But according to Chevron's data, the pour point of Delo straight 30 weight is -27F, whereas the pour point of Delo straight 30 is -24F. Not much of a difference.

Should I resort to a multi-grade oil for winter use or not?

Without a doubt, yes. The straight weights don't meet any cold cranking spec's. That's great for hot weather driving. That straight weight oil will take a LOT longer to get to the top of the engine than the oil spec'd for 5w or 10w will when the hot weather is traded for the 30-50F (or colder) days & nights of winter.

pour point is pointless....you don't care how the oil pours out of a beaker, you want the ability to be pumped and ability of the oil impede movement of crank counterweight/viscometer.....
