Hi Ron,

Pour point is useful in determining storage conditions with Grp IV and V oils, but loses significance in oils that may exhibit a freeze point. There are many pumpibility tests available such as CCS, MRV, and the Gelation Index that 427 mentioned that are better for determining use conditions.

Mineral oils do use a pour point depressant (PPI) additive to suppress the effect of wax crystal formation and they are fairly effective.

And I agree with your advice to Mike - 15w40 is a bit risky at -10F just due to the high viscosity, which will pump slowly and draw a lot of amperage from the battery. Personally I would use a 5W-X oil if I expected an extended period of temperatures below +10F.

I once formulated an additive designed to assist starting in borderline climates subject to occassional real cold spells. One pint added to the oil min the crankcase dropped the viscosity by one W grade while maintaining the high temp viscosity. The beauty was that you could add it when cold temps were forecast and it would maintain effectiveness for about three weeks to carry through the cold spell. It used a special light ester base oil that cut viscosity, raised VI, and had low volatility to stay put. STP was going to market it under the name "Oil Anti-Freeze" as their winter product (since their normal additive was summer seasonal) and we took it right up to their approval when they were sold, all new personnel came in, and the project fell into a crack.

Wow! Reinforces my opinion of management types. I bet that they would of sold boatloads of that stuff given that our society likes quick fixes to problems they ignored in the past.

I've seen it stated that excessive PPI hurts CCS and MRV in conventional oils. In other words you can get a lower PP but CCS and MRV suffer. Do you agree? Quaker State seems to to be an example of that when you compare it to PetroCan. Almost looks like Quaker State was blended for those only looking at PP.

Tom you should have been on this forum when they all had a major spaz attack over what ester is used in syntec from germany hint it is a PMA ester ring a bell if so, do not say keep then guessing.

Don't know, Ron. I've never formulated with PPDs as I don't work with mineral oils.

I don't know what ester is used in the German Syntec - not from us. I can probably find out if I had a sample. I helped design the ester used in the US Syntec, but lost that business when they went Group III.

Yeah, it was a bummer - lots of work. I tried to raise the concept with them again a couple years back but they didn't want to talk. Maybe I'll go peddle it elsewhere.

Canada must have fairly mild winters. I grew up in Nebraska where temps in the winter would drop to -30 -40 degree F and stay that way for some time. I remember frequently there would be days that the temp would climb to 0F for the high and then dip back down into the sub temps during the night. We just kept the vehicles plugged into the block heaters, or sometimes used a dip stick oil heater.. and other times.. just trusted to luck that it would start.

Put some 5W-40 Rotella Synthetic oil in our Cummins diesel on our grape harvester. Felix says it's been starting a whole lot better. Don't have to put on the heaters to start the engine. He had 30W straight mineral oil (Citgo) in there before....from a 55gal drum (near empty) in a cold unheated shop that drops to around 0 in the winter.

Most of the major cities in Canada where most of the population is, really don't get super cold in the winter like people think. Sure, there are places like Calgary or Winnipeg that get super cold, but for instance Toronto really doesn't go below 0F very often at all. Most of the winter we have daytime highs of about 25-32F, and overnight lows of about 15-20F.
 
East of Manitoba temps don't get that cold. The great lakes moderate the temperature in Ontario and the ocean in the atlantic provinces. Manitoba and Saskatchewan can get very cold, but not so often in recent years. I recall going to university in Saskatchewan years ago when it stayed below -30F for two weeks, but that doesn't happen much anymore. Alberta is not as cold, and parts of BC are quite mild. Vancouver shuts down if it snows.

In central Alberta I saw -46C (close to -50F) on my car outside temp indicator about 3 years ago, but that is very rare. I was driving from the city to the country. It was warmer(?) than -40 in the city but cooled down that much once you got outside the waste heat zone of the city.
 
It's my understanding that Adipates, Neopolyol and Phthalates are the three most common esters found in engine oil. Bruce, Tom?

Polyol esters (technically "neopentyl polyol esters") and Adipate type diesters are by far the most common - hard to say which of the two is bigger in motor oils globally as we focus more on higher temperature applications. Adipates are the more common ones in ATFs, gear oils, and industrial oils when blended in PAOs or Group IIIs. Both POEs and Adipates have high VIs, high flash points, low pour points, low volatility, and help seal swell and additive solubility. POEs excel in most of these properties plus have much better lubricity and oxidative stability. My paper "About Esters" on our Hatco website Hatco gives a lot more details.

Phthalates are aromatic so they have low VIs (50s & 60s), higher pour points (-30 to -50F), and lower cost, but they swell seals much more so they are sometimes used at low doses as a low cost way to just improve seal swell and additive solubility. There is a little Dimerate diester used in motor oils as well.
