Nextgen is the best conventional oil?

I was comparing different motor oils to figure out which one was the best for the price. I was on autozone.com. They had the flash and pour points on their website. I went to a couple of the manufacturer's websites to make sure that the specifications were correct.

Here are the 5w30 conventional oil results:

Valvoline Nextgen flash point: 433*F Pour point: -54.4*F
Motorcraft flash point: 433*F Pour point: -41*F
Mobil 5000 flash point: 430*F Pour point: -33*F
QuakerState flash point: 424*F Pour point: -22*F
Pennzoil flash point: 421*F Pour point: -38*F
AutoZone flash point: 410*F Pour point: -30*F
Havoline flash point: 392*F Pour point: -33*F
Castrol flash point: 392*F Pour Point: -38*F
Valvoline flash point: 220*F Pour Point: -32.8*F
Peak flash point: 206*F Pour Point: -39*F

Flash point is the temperature at which the oil produces vapors that can ignite. Pour point is the coldest temperature at which oil will still flow. My conclusion is that Nextgen is the best because it has the highest flash point and lowest pour point. Plus, it goes through the same refining process as crude oil. The 50% of valvoline's recycled was already refined before being used. So if you think about it, half of the oil was refined twice and therefore cleaner than regular conventional oil. It is 50% refined oil and 50% re-refined oil.

If you define "best" as only having a high flash point and a low pour point, then it might be the best. To be sure, there are other factors that influence how an oil performs in a certain application besides these two numbers. Not saying Nextgen is a bad oil, just saying that it may not be "best" depending on how you define it.

I am surprised at some of the lower flash points on that list.

Some of your numbers are mixed up. For instance, the valvoline convention 5w30 has a flash point of 220*c not F. ALso the numbers for the nextgen and regular valvoline are identitcal.

You are mixing up data that is reported in C and F.

I checked the Peak data in particular and it is reported in C. At 206F it would extremely close to a combustible liquid which begins at 200F (93C).

But its a lower pour point than the Valvoline conventional?
 
From the Valvoline PDF, the pour point is -44 deg F (-42c) and the FP is 428F (220c).

- The NOACK is a poor 14.4% and the CCS an average 6100cP.

So absolutely not, two fair reporting specs do not make a "best" oil. If the oil does meet ILSAC GF-5, it has to be decent, though.

I got the flash and pour points from Autozone's website. I will check the manufacturer's websites and correct any errors.

It's the same. Actually, the specs between nextgen and regular white bottle are all identical.

The flashpoints you listed for Valvoline and Peak are centigrade, NOT Fahrenheit.

There's nothing exceptional about NextGen. It has the same specs and additive package as Valvoline's Premium Conventional motor oil. The only difference is that 50% of the base stock is re-refined.
 
I use next gen in 2 of my vehicles in 5w20. And believe it or not, it acts just like every other oil i have put in them for 300,000 combined miles. It's exactly like every other sn mineral based oil.

I can't comment on which is best. But I've got some of the Valvoline NexGen in my car right now and I'm perfectly happy with how everything feels. Though "feel" is not very technical and doesn't say how much it's protecting. But it's SN rated and from a major oil manufacturer, so I have faith in it doing wha it's supposed to do.

If you're debating if you wan to try it or not, I say go for it and get the rebate off Valvoline's website for added savings
