Since these are often a topic of discussion, I figured why not post 'em! Many manufacturers put them in wild and wacky locations!

Seems like an odd place for an oil cooler?
Of all my vehicles/toys only my ATV has a rad for the engine oil as its oil cooled, and they stuck it at the front just above the front diff. My tractor uses the low tech method of just having a big sump... 11L for 40 hp and the pan has some extra area as it stradles the front drive shaft.

Factory coolant based sandwich style oil cooler on my toyota tundra v8. Coolant enters the filter base/oil cooler through where the red circles are.

That's nothin'. The new M5 has water cooled PCM's!!!! They are mounted next to the cats! It seems insane at first glance.

So does that mean the PCM is cooled to coolant temp or is it a separate closed system? If it is cooled to ~200 degrees, that seems crazy.

According to C&D they had to move the pcm to outside the passenger compartment for packaging issues. They split it in two and mounted it next to the cats!

Water cooling with coolant was needed to prevent failure.

Sometimes BMW gets a bit bizarre with their designs and engineering.

Those are air-oil coolers, this is a coolant-oil heat exchanger, more consistent I would imagine.

So is this one, '06 2.4 Ecotec LE5....You can see it better in the drawing.

Dodge loves those things. They put an almost identical unit on the police package Hemis.

These are great for street use but are putting more heat into the coolant than many cars can tolerate at the track.

1982 MB 300CD Turbodiesel OM617.952, about 120 HP. MB used a slightly less flimsy design on this one compared to the 240D:

i agree. 30 minute session on the track i will see 270-280f oil temps and 230-235 coolant temps on a 95f degree day
