I am curious. What is the thinking behind posting your latest blah blah blah in the various threads??? Is someone doing a marketing survey????? And what does it accomplish????

Personally I think its a good thing. If someone out there has the same vehicle as another members they can see what people are using. Maybe they will PM and ask some questions. Allows people to see what people actually use across the membership instead of the koolaid drinkers who post brand x every time they can. We have a lot of members who don't post that much. They spend QUITE a bit of time on the board reading so more info is a good thing. shrug Bill

The "Post your latest oil change" thread has been running for nearly three years now. I always post mine, and I find it entertaining to see what oil and filters people are using, as well as what kind of OCIs they're doing. BIU also makes a good point, in that you could use the thread to identify people with cars similar to yours, and PM them about how they liked a given oil in their car. There are a bunch of different oils available at a wide range of price points, and it is always interesting to try something you haven't used before. Having the opportunity to PM someone about their experience with an oil you haven't tried represents a useful source of information.

Agree, vegging out on the car boards is sort of a hobby, perhaps a lame one, but at least I am not watching football.

Personally, I don't care about the engine oil thread. I feel like API/ILSAC-rated engine oils are interchangeable (also why I rarely go into the engine oil forums). I like the specialty fluid threads, though. It's interesting to see what people are using.

As a scientist, you should know that the thread would be a very poor marketing survey, with, among other things, the sample choice being very poor. wink Sorry, couldn't resist kidding you. Personally, I like to read the thread just to see what other people are using and what's available out there. While we might have a few unique oils up in Canada, there are plenty of others we don't ever see, so it's interesting to look at. Heck, when I was a kid, as far as I knew, the only oils in existence were Esso XD-3, Quaker State, and Shell (the three my dad used), and Castrol (which had the TV ads). Coming through here, I've certainly learned about oils that we can't even get here. Besides, how else are we to know who's going to get M1 iron, Pennzoil/Quaker State/Castrol sludge? And this is how we police the 3,000 mile/3 month rule, too. wink

I personally love the threads, to see what folks are doing and choosing for their rides. If you don't like it you don't have to read the threads, Mola!

+1 It also shows how good different companies are at marketing their products.

+2 Just seeing the title in the threads makes me feel like I'm on MySpace - "Oooh, I'm at the mall -- Ooh, I'm getting a pizza....." The overall feel of the site has changed drastically in the last year or so in my opinion, although many people felt it sooner. I'm weaning myself away....
