Castrol Universal......always slightly skeptical about all the approvals covered under one fluid
Couldn't resist picked it up at Walmart

Universally good experience with it with Nissan CVTs from what I could find. They are about as picky as they come. I did ultimately go with Red Line, but I almost bought this.
Idemitsu from Napa with a coupon is generally around $10 per qt. Eneos eco is my favorite but is getting harder to find, but really quiets the cvt down. I’m not a fan of anything that is red in color, definitely not in an under warranty cvt. My daughter beats the daylights out of my old Altima and keeps chugging along with Valvoline so I have real world proof on that stuff. It did seem to burn off in the 30k it was in service. When I changed it a few weeks back, it was noticeably lower on the dipstick and zero leaks.

If I owned a car with a CVT: I would run an approved fluid and change it often.

CVT fluid is not a place I would skimp.

Using Amsoil CVT in our 2017 CRV isn't skimping. This car has a few issues now (actually fuel dilution only) but the CVT is not one of those issues. Well over 100K on the fluid, probably time for a complete multi (5) change out.

I use Amsoil MTF (vis range same as 5W-30) in my 2019 Tacoma. Works better than stock and likely protects better as well - and in theme with other comments here. Don't need a 4 cSt fluid!

i didn’t know that existed! i will likely buy that when i do another drain and fill as it will likely be compatible with the synchro in 99-07 gm transfercases

edit- OUCH. at the price. i’ll continue on with 5w-30 motor oil and shift into 4wd at very low speeds.

100k without any changes on the CVT fluid!?

Yeah I did. Sorry. I changed with a multi dump and fill (5 times) way back. Then let it run. No degradation in shifting or oddities. Wife wants an e-car/hybrid at some point.

The drainer - filler plugs might be tough now, but I used nickel anti-seize.
My Tundra says to use 75W-90 GL-5. I use AMSOIL Severe Gear.

Sounds right, same basic unit and that was the recommendation for years and years.

The ZF transmissions on Ram trucks are a little tricky and require the pan flange to be level. I had to jack up the rear end about a foot to get this accomplished. The previous hand pumps I have used drove me crazy so I purchased a 12V pump for this type of job but it has worked on gear oil as well. Huge time saver. Took about 9 bottles of Mopar ZF specific fluid that is not cheap since I was adding a deep sump PPE pan. Fill procedure requires running through reverse and 1st/2nd to get temps up and monitor an overflow at the fill plug. Fun working under hot exhaust.

That's an impressive run! I am too scared of our CVT to let it go that long. Planning on a drain and fill every 10k or so.

If amsoil wouldn’t tint the fluid red then I’d be all over it from the initial change with my Nissans. If I did have a cvt issue and the dealer drained the fluid they’d instantly stamp it as the wrong fluid, then it would be a fight. Nissan oem is blue but goes golden in 1k so anything close is fine. Pretty much why I’ve never used castrol.

I used the Lubeguard CVT fluid in a 2017 Accord Sport with excellent results. I liked it better than the Honda stuff.
I did a drain and fill with lubegaurd cvt fluid and the additive probably 30k ago. I fell for the bitog hype about anything lubegaurd. My cvt temps rose by 8 degrees on a somewhat cooler day and the shutter was very present. I dumped both when I got home from my trip and did subsequent drain and fills to get rid of it. I believe it was the Lubeguard cvt fluid that has a gazillion recommendations but still haven’t used either since.

Curious... How do you know your cvt temperatures? I used Honda HC-2 in my '13 and '17 Accords; last year I serviced a friend's '17 Accord with Lubeguard when he got it used. The transmission seemed to really like it.
