John Deere D140 lawn tractor. 306 hours and ten seasons on the machine. Thirty two hours on the oil and filter.

Out: 2 Quarts 15w-40 Rotella T6
In: same

I pulled the oil from topside using a Harbor Freight fluid extractor. This was the quickest and easiest oil change yet on this machine. The Fram TG3614 will go for another season.

The battery has six full seasons with a build date of 3/19 and is obviously on borrowed time. It starts albeit weakly after an hour on the charger. I find it tempting to see just how far it can go.

Toro 50 inch ZTR w/ 22 hp Briggs & Stratton Intek Platinum

Out: 2 quarts Valvoline 5w20 HM Full Synthetic & NAPA 1056
In : 2 quarts Rotella T5 10w30 & WIX 51056

John Deere 42 inch rider w/ some small Briggs & Stratton engine (Close Friends Mower)

Out: OEM ~10 yr old John Deere Conventional Oil & OEM John Deere Filter
In: 1.5 quarts Rotella T5 10w30 & Purolator L20195

Oil in JD was so dirty, but no metal shavings or clumps seen. Oil filter seems to be holding up okay. The Purolator filter is approximately 2x the size, barely fits hood over the engine. Was going to put in a WIX 51056, but saved it for my mower. Purolator was cheap and looked well built. Come to find out, WIX 51056 is interchangeable with WIX 51348 - a filter I have many of, which is about 1.5x the size.

I will possibly order more WIX 51348 from RockAuto, or switch to Champ PH400. I am leaning more towards the Champ PH400 - looks like a well built filter with more than adequate filtering, and about double the oil capacity. The 22 hp Briggs has issues on hills with oil, so a little more capacity in the filter would be nice.

The Toro ZTR burns some oil on startup, nice blue pile of smoke. It may improve with a thicker oil, but I suspect its a combination of needing a valve adjustment and some loose rings. I may run restore and protect in the future, but we will see.

That poor JD mower!
For the Toro, 10W30 or SAE30HD would be the minimum grade. Try some 15W40 diesel oil in it for the next change.

Yep, WIX51348 crosses to an Amsoil EA15K51.
The shorter WIX51056 crosses to an Amsoil EA15K53.
Do your due diligence to verify…😉

I'm surprised how well the engines can run on such horrible oil. Growing up, I had a 12.5 hp Briggs that never had an oil change, just add some oil every few weeks - for 15 years.

I'll have to try the 15w40 - do you have any experience with it?

Correct. Once the WIX 51056 is crossed over, it's a lot easier to find filters and cross over to other brands.

WIX 51056 --> WIX 51348 (Slightly longer)
WIX 51056 --> WIX 51516 (About twice the size)

Yes. I like it. I prefer a xxW40 oil in my small engines. Right now, I'm running Shell Rotella T6 5w40 in my 22KW Generac and Kawasaki Mule. I currently have Valvoline 10W40 motorcycle oil in my Gravely ZT.

Generac 18Kw home standby generator running on NG. Installed April 2024

20.5 hours on this change interval, had a power outage last evening pushing the hours past 25. Book says you can change over to synthetic oil after 25 hours. First change was done at 4.5 hours (6/26/2024) to inspect filter for break-in material. One year/100-hour changes from here out or less depending on usage.

Out: Valvoline 5w30 Daily conventional & Fram TG4386

In: Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 & Generac 070185ES (for warranty purposes)

Have the same generator. Kept reading online about how slow the drain tube is. I ran the unit in man for a few minutes then drained through the tube rather quickly.

Went back with synthetic 5W/40 though since it gets pretty hot here.

I also have some Mobil 1 0w40 on the shelf if needed. Yeah, I gave mine 20-25 minutes to fully drain/drip out while I did other things.
