Post your latest small engine oil change

I think there was a serial number break where they got oil filters. My grandparents bought an older 4x2 second hand and put thousands of hours on it with no oil filter. I wouldn’t worry too much. The big thing on these is keeping the differential fluid changed and don’t cheap out on it. They have wet brakes which requires the differential to be removed and split to replace the discs. My grandparents got changed with yellow bucket 303 and the brakes chattered, grabbed and all around sucked. Took a few changed with Hygard to get things back to normal.
awesome thank you for the the information! I will service it, along with the fuel filter and spark plugs soon.

I did find that there is an add on kit that John Deer also sells for adding an oil filter, but I need to confirm compatibility. https://www.greentractortalk.com/threads/2008-gator-cx-add-on-oil-filter-assembly.203253/

Today used leftover oil from friday on the power washer, about .25 quarts even of edge 5w50 and total quartz 10w60 for a total of .5 quarts. .

The power washer surged for about 15 minutes. I cleaned the carburetor and after another 15 minutes ran smoother. Its time for a nap.

Don’t remember the details of my mower, it’s an OHV Briggs. Doesn’t burn a drop of oil, and it gets used pretty hard. I should keep better track of oil changes, but I don’t…

Out: 400ml of conventional 5W-30, don’t remember what. Pretty black and thick.
Time on oil: About 1-1.5 years, just don’t remember.
In: 400ml of a mix of Kendall 5W-30 and very old API SH Quaker State 5W-30.

Did the spring (or fall) maintenance on the Deere lawn tractor in my signature. Air filter/pre-filter cleaning, grease the zirks, and oil Rotella T6 15w40 changed in 2020 (I think) to the same. I touched up the filter grommet which was starting to crack in the thin part; I augmented with a bunch of RTV.
I do a lot of push mowing for exercise, so, the tractor was used maybe 3 or 4 times per year the past few years. In all honesty, the oil was likely fine. The fuel line and the front wheel bearings need tending some time "soon."

2000 Craftsman 22in some type of briggs Quantum engine.
Out:???
In: Rotella T4 15W40
Gotta get a brake cable for it, the previous owner had the brake cable snap, they bypassed the brake but the kill switch was still staying activated, I pulled the wire for it and have to push it up against the spark plug to ground out the coil to kill it, so before I can truly use it I need to fi that because that's just not safe.
I changed the oil in this again today, I gave it tomy dad last spting, he didn't end up using it last season, but has used it a lot this season.
So I dumped out the T4 that was getting pretty dark and put in some O'Reilly HD30 since there was a bottle of it sitting in his basement, I think I bought it like 10 years ago when I was a teenager living at his apartment it was with some non detergent SAE30 that I think I had mixed with a little mineral spirits in an oil can to use on bike chains at the time.

I just changed the oil on this today, didn't snap any pics since I was at my dad's and just mowed and just decided to do it impromptu since I had found a quart of O'Reilly HD30 in his basement from probably 10 years ago that was almost completely full. I think I may have bought it when I lived with him at the apartment he rented at the time when I was still in school. It was in a box with the non-detergent Accel SAE30 I had that that I mixed with a little mineral spirits back then to used on bike chains, I don't remember why either of us would've bought HD30 from O'Reilly since we lived in an apartment and didn't mow or have anything with a small engine.

20hp Intek B&S
Out: Factory Fill, Factory B&S Filter, unknown OCI
In: Frankenbrew of leftover 1.5 quarts of QS SAE30 SJ, Turf Gard 10w30 SL, and Castrol Edge 5w50

Will run this for a short while after doing a few repairs, then dump/fill in a week or two as a mental flush more than a practical flush. This engine has sat for about 10 years. What came out was semi gross.

Picked this up last year off a guy that said it was fouling spark plugs every few uses and I took the head off and B12 soaked it also ran it a while with gumout MSTU mixed in the oil and changed the oil a few times in short order, had it as a back up, used it in my yard a few times last season, lent it to my mom's neighbor that replaced the broken muffler and used it a few times before they rellocated for a new job, It doesn't seem to be using oil anymore so I guess the piston soak and MSTU helped, I'm going to give it to one of my mom's co-workers that needs a mower since I already have enough mowers around.

John Deer X354, 16.7 hours, 6 years old.

Out: 1 quart FF oil from the K46 transmission.
In: 1 quart 5w40 Total Quartz 9000 Energy

I went through the vent valve, I have a new one on order but the old one is ok for the moment. I will think about retrofiting an external expansion tank next year. Watched several youtube videos of people removing the transaxle and so forth. With the low hours I didnt see the need. Did plenty of research and saw recommendations ranging from Hygard, 10w30, 5w50, and some folks doing 5w40 so felt comfortable giving JD the french treatment. The extractor only took out 1 quart but i'm sure it will mix with the other half of the unit over time and even itself out. The old oil looked like I could have put it back into an engine, but I put it in my waste bucket for mixing with diesel for future wood preservative projects.

Also installed a blue quick change hose instead of the junky oil drain it had previously. I could tell the old drain was leaky but now good to go.

Yesterday I dumped the previous fill and filter (yes i know it was all perfectly good oil) after running it for about an hour. It went into a waste bucket for future wood preserving. The riding mower revival project however was a success. Installed a new gas tank, gas lines, and carberator and it is now running good. After reading into how fragile Intek engines can be according to a few youtube channels (doneboy73, Chicanic, and a few others) I changed it one final time. It will see relatively hard use at the in laws mowing an acre of ex farmland in East Dallas. I will maintain it annually going forward.

You might want to consider a 15w-40 the next time around. I use Rotella T6 15w-40 in a slightly cooler climate near you. That being said, my generator stays in the garage where it never goes below 32F. Keep using the 10w-30 if your genrator needs to start at 20 degrees. Personally I am more concerned about temperatures above 90 degrees, which pushes me towards the 15w-40. Odds are that you will be good forever on a 10w-30, but this is BITOG where we can always do better.
