Couldn't get an oil change appointment at the Kia dealer for the next three weeks, so figured I'd take the Valvoline Restore and Protect plunge at the local Walmart on 19 June. They made a big fuss about needing to install 5W20 in since that's what the oil fill cap specifies, but cheerfully agreed to install the OEM filter I brought in.

Took a long trip on Father's Day to visit my dear old Dad. Had the transmission in Sport mode the entire trip and gave the car the ol' Italian tuneup on the way home. In-dash computer showed a 0.8L/100km (4 mpg) improvement in fuel economy to 6.44L/100km (36.5 mpg) for the final 200 km of the trip. I haven't seen fuel economy numbers this good since the car was nearly new.

That sounds too early to change the air filter. A new air filter won’t filter as well as one with 20k. I usually go 40-50k or more on mine.

Those are rare circumstances though. I’m sure that a lot of people on here change their air filters too often (much like they change their oil too often as well)

To clarify, we bought the car 20K miles ago and this filter was in it when purchased. Unknown as to how long it had really been in there so out it went. Also, a lot of gravel/oil chip road driving here in southwestern Illinois.

I used to live in an area with bad forest fires regularly and didn’t notice any difference with vehicle air filters. At work most our helicopters have a fancy version of a K&N air filter (look up AFS or FDC engine filters) and they can build up material real fast when they’re around fires.

I have 5 jugs of Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and my car no longer takes oil so were set for a while. Biannual changes on this car due to low mileage.
