2025 Honda Pilot Elite
16,975 Odometer, 3,968 OCI, 60% OLM
Out: HPL Premium Plus PCMO 0W-20, Pentius PLXL7317
In: HPL Premium Plus PCMO 0W-20, Carquest Premium 84356

This was the first OCI after switching from Amsoil Signature Series to HPL Premium Plus PCMO. Oil was darker than expected, but looked good. The filter media is removed and wrapped up at the moment and will be inspecting soon. Everything about the filter looked clean as a whistle inside. Will be posting filter media pictures.

Why so short of an interval? Did you hit the OLM?

Why the 0W-20 when you're not running an API spec oil anyway? I assume it's for warranty concerns. Or do you think it's going to be good enough since it's HPL might as well get that extra 0.5% to 1% of fuel economy?

OLM was 60% (as noted). HPL is at the high end of -20 grade viscosity to begin with. Also, after emailing back and forth with HPL, although the oil itself will have no problem running extended OCIs, the J35Y8 engine is known for having carbon issues, and at HPL's suggestion, will run shorter intervals, but not usually this short. We have a lot of traveling coming up soon and today was a good day to finish flushing the Amsoil Signature Series out with this OCI. I'll probably run 5k - 7.5k intervals going forward.

I appreciate HPL's research into Honda's J35Y8 engine and admitting their oil can't fix poor engineering, thus their recommending shorter OCIs. Had I known at the beginning of owning the Pilot what I now know, I'd be running Valvoline Restore and Protect from the first OCI and keep OCIs between 4k-5k.

What is your ultimate goal running the HPL and do you plan on running 8-10K OCIs eventually?

What is your ultimate goal running the HPL and do you plan on running 8-10K OCIs eventually?
I've used Amsoil for fifty years and never pushed extended OCIs. The plan is to keep the HPL OCIs 5k - 7.5k going forward.

My ultimate goal? Have this be the last vehicle my wife and I bought before hanging up our keys... or someone taking them away from us due to old age. Currently we run ~15k miles/year, almost all highway driving to/from our daughter's in Wisconsin, but that will get fewer as we get older. I don't mind shortening OCIs and changing other fluids before a maintenance minder tells me to do so. Regardless if the vehicle lasts or not, at least I'll know it's not because of my failure to do what I reasonably could to keep it healthy.
