Post your latest oil change

8k OCI in an Ecoboost with a non-boutique? 😬 I’d be careful. Do you burn any oil?
I used to run up to 10k with an Ecoboost in my Ford Transit. Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and Fram Ultra (0ld kind) filters. UOA´s looked good and it ran like new until at 80k an oil change kid at a trusted shop double-gasketed the filter causing oil to all blow out and the engine to blow. Fortunately, their insurance covered a new engine, which also ran perfectly until about another 50k when we sold it. Those engines liked Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30.

I wouldn´t have normally gone that far on oil changes, but my ex-wife was driving constantly and racking the miles up faster than I could keep up. 5k would have been my preference. But it did just fine.

But it did just fine
Did just fine.... so far.

I'd be careful. Glad it worked out. I just am going off of used oil analysis from others here who show pretty extreme fuel dilution and viscosity loss in those engines even on boutiques. Smart to go with a 30 grade oil.

Trying Valvoline Restore and Protect because I like it in my Accord V6. Burns no oil but it’s a bit varnished under the oil cap as pictured. Interested to see if it does anything.

Apparently no basic training done for people doing oil changes. Crazy that this stuff happens when it's so easy to prevent.

Yeah, poor kid, who was probably 18 or so, got fired on the spot, too. From the conversation with the owner, who is a friend, he had has some problems with QC with this kid before, but it had not cost anyone an engine until this.

Why the viscosity mixture?

Why the viscosity mixture?
It's what I had available right now. It ran 0w20 from dealer oil changes until I bought it 8 months or so ago and I used 5w30 on a previous oil change. Didn't notice any differences between the two oils so not sure the car cares if it gets one or another. Next change will probably 5w30 but I wouldn't be worried about it if it was 0w20.

Also found this funnel drain so I don't have to keep a paper towel propped under the funnel after I use it.

Who is the manufacturer?

Yes, it's actually better for the car for each owner to do their own DIY oil changes, so the owner can know it's done right.

There are so many bad experiences on reddit of bad oil changes gone wrong from oil change places.

Many oil change places charge from $60 to $100 for an oil change with dino bulk oil and a $2 core filter, done by new hires who are making minimum wage with very little experience. Even dealerships have their express lube annex, with very young looking people doing their oil changes.

Dealerships do so many oil changes, and seem to be in a price gouging mood nowadays. It might be tempting for them to use a 5w20 conventional bulk oil from a drum and list 0W-20 Full Synthetic on the invoice for a $100 oil change.

Think of the profit potential of that, if a dealership does 500 oil changes a month @ $90 profit per oil change = $45,000 a month extra profit. Whose to know for sure? One advantage of a DIY oil change is you know exactly what oil and filter is being used.

The cost savings using DIY oil changes are significant.
The total cost of a DIY oil change can be as low as $20 (including a Dexos 1 Gen 3 Full Synthetic oil and an oil filter rated at 99% @ 30 microns) with free delivery from Walmart.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance High Mileage 5w-30

Hoping it can help clear up excessive oil burning on a 2004 Dakota with 186k miles (approx 1qt/700 miles) but that’s probably wishful thinking.
Hi guys, thought I’d report back and say that the Mobil 1 Extended Performance High Mileage has decreased the oil burning to a measured 900 miles / QT, on the dot. It’s hard to say exactly how much of an improvement this constitutes, since the oil burning was so inconsistent before (short versus long trips perhaps, amongst other variables) but I’m confident that this represents at the bare minimum an immediate 20% improvement. I may not have this vehicle long enough to warrant 4 changes of Valvoline Restore and Protect, so very happy to get something that made an immediate difference.

However, there was an old post on BITOG from a guy who’s company had a fleet of these and supposedly the half of the fleet running 10W-30 failed (an approved grade but the engines didn’t like them.) I wonder if this stuff is ultimately good for it, since it is so thick.

The only way a 10W-xx is going to make an engine "fail" is if it's being used in way too cold temperatures, and during cold start-ups the oil is too thick to pump and adequately lubricate the engine.

They didn’t have 5w30 in the Valvoline Restore and Protect at Walmart so I told the boy to just grab the HM. I’ll probably toss a bottle of rislone in there when I get to it since this was the first run of Valvoline Restore and Protect and I’d like to keep after the cleaning on the next few runs.

This vehicle was an oil burner?
