Post your latest oil change

Yes, I’m aware I made an error (gasp). Please don’t get “bro” more wound up about something trivial on an internet forum. At this point I’m not sure an apology letter would suffice.
I erased my post about 94 seconds after I posted it.
Sorry to say, I haven't any postal stamps for your apology letter.

Don’t worry, no need for an apology letter—just some mutual respect in conversation will do. Glad we can all learn from each other.

OLM reset.

Since I've had this car for almost a year, I figured it was high time for an oil change. And since I had just watched an Oil Geek video where he discussed the benefit of a magnetic drain plug, I planned to put one in it if it didn't have one already.

Changing the filter went well. On the 3800 V6, you can access the filter without even diving under the car. Just a little torque action with the strap wrench, and it came right off.

But the oil change was doomed to go wrong from the start. When the previous owner had replaced the engine, he didn't quite get the exhaust back in the right position and it was too close to the drain plug to allow removal. I had to pry back on the exhaust to get enough room, and when I got the drain plug out, I found that it had been cut off to deal with the tight clearance, so if it had a magnet originally, it didn't have one now. And the drain plug gasket was deformed and sticking to the oil pan, leaking slightly, so was due for replacement anyway.

Stubbornly refusing to give up on my dream of a magnetic drain plug, I hunted around the garage for a 2x4 with the right length to put under the exhaust pipe. I carefully lowered the car onto the 2x4 to rest on the exhaust and bend it up to hopefully allow a correct-length drain plug to be installed. Then I went to my local autoparts store to get a magnetic drain plug. They showed one in the computer but when the counterman brought it out, there was no magnet. So, on to another parts store. (I hate when simple errands turn into epic quests.) The next store had a magnetic drain plug, no fuss, no muss, and FINALLY something went right on this oil change, so I drive back home and see if I can install it. I jacked the car back up to get it off the 2x4, but sadly, there wasn't enough room to get the magnetic drain plug in, but the clearance was better. I had to put the old, sawed-off, leaking one back in so I could complete the 20-minute task in about 2 hours.

I'm not giving up. I just need to calm down a couple of days so I can take my 5-pound hammer and spherical drift to form a dimple into the exhaust pipe so I can get my BLESSED magnetic drain plug in.

comments: reluctant install on this fluid and filter. My local WM has been out of stock on Ford filters so shopped at Advance Ap for a discounted OC bundle. Car was running a bit odd immediately (severe midrange sag on tip in) thinking initial higher viscosity. Start and low rpm running is very quiet.

I'll give it another 100 miles chance; if no improvement I'll swap the filter back to Motorcraft as I am weary of Chinese fabricated filters. If no improvement with that change I will add a 1/2qt of M1 0w16 to thin the sump.
If no improvement there - out goes the Mobil 1.

Car has run well in the past on Dealer bulk, Castrol Magnatec 5w20 and QS FS 10W30 ( But: Noisy when hot on QS FS 5w20; Horrendous engine racket with Castrol Edge 5w20; Noisy all around on the last batch of Valvoline Advanced 5w20)

Just did some errands today. Car ran very well indeed.
It's got over 100mi on the oil change now.

Car lugs nicely in OD 6th gear around 1200-1500 rpm without sagging on hills. After having API SN+ and SP in this over the past few changes, I wonder if we can give some credit to the anti-LSPI DI pack and the thicker oil for the good lugging performance - the ECU not pulling timing or setting the VVT for EGR.

I am not intentionally lugging the engine - the drivetrain programming puts the trans in top gear for a low rpm cruise A.S.A.P. in normal driving, even though it's a 12.5:1 compression, little 122cu. in aluminum four banger pulling a 3500lb AWD vehicle with big donkey me on board.

The better running and performance may be that the ECU finally figured out what to do with this 5w30 grade Mobil 1 after running on a fuel diluted 5w20 for the last 3 of this 6 months OCI ... that was suddenly dumped out.

Just a quick follow up note as I just don't want to give the impression that I am needlessly XoM product bashing.

5w30 may be the future ticket for that chatter Arco. Had the noise not stopped, I would have recommended a bottle of Rislone Oil Treatment.
Funny you say that. Just to extend things a bit I dumped in a1/2 bottle of STP Synthetic oil treatment at the end of the last OCI. This motor honey may not have ZDDP but this one has a Calcium compound I recall from a VOA. It worked well for a month, LOL.

What did you think of the FRAM Titanium? What was on before and what prompted you to get the Purolator Boss?

Just curious, I'm interested in trying one of those at my next oil change. Coming from a H/K OEM filter.

Hey there, I've been using this oil for nearly the last 7k miles in my 2019 Kia Sportage with 112k miles. I have 3600 miles on the current fill (2 of four planned OCIs with the VRP) and I do believe it's doing something.

You should feel good about your choice. Follow the OM/manufacturer's OCI recommendation, with an OEM or better filter, and feel good about it. It is a slow process though, just a FYI/heads up. I wasn't noticing any improvement in oil consumption in my car, which has been steadily burning a quart every 500 miles for the first 5k miles or so. But over the last couple weeks and 1500 miles, it' has gotten better. Its been over 900 miles as of today since I last added a quart and I'm not even at low yet, I'm right between half full and a quart low.
