Just did 10,000 km / 6,200 miles on a FrankenBrew of Penrite Vantage 10W40 semi-syn, Valvoline SynPower 0W40 full syn, Castrol Magnatec 10W30 semi-syn, Castrol Edge 10W30 full syn and Valvoline DuraBlend 10W40 semi-syn.
A buddy gave me his straggler his straggler qts of oil and I ran it 6 mo in my FORMULA last summer 2020(MAY through OCT) ~ 1500 mi. Engine ran unbelievably smooth all summer. Then I changed to RGT 5w30 prior to winter storage in which I haven't pulled the car out yet for the season.
Not that I make this a practice anymore as I once did about 45+ yrs ago when money was tight. However, I'll do it now and again with more compatible oils that I have laying around from our own vehicles. And not that I believe that this is an optimal way of doing an OCI but, I also don't think it hurts anything and I have my own proof of this. Lots of it!
In my distant past, I've used 5-6 different grades of oil, each being a different brand as well and my engines(placebo) seemed to run better/smoother/stronger than with the required/recommended oils.
5qts of 5w-30 Rotella Gas Truck + 2qts of Delo 400LE 5w40 , 7qt sump in the trailblazer, I didn't want to open another bottle of RGT and the Delo was already open/
I keep an empty 5qt jug and dump the extra oil in it after all the oil changes I do where the sump doesn't quite take 5 quarts. Mostly 0w20, 5w20 and even a small amount of 5w30. Various brands, mostly full synthetic and some high mileage blends. When the jug gets full, it goes into the car that needs an oil change next whether that be the Van or the Mazda. Last time it went in the Mazda. No issues and the car ran great.
I rarely do any kind of Frankenbrew but a few random quarts / portions were hanging around, so...
1 qt O'Reilly 5w30 full synthetic
1 qt Mobil 1 5w30
1.5 qt Mobil 1 10w30
0.5 qt MMO (hoping to thin out the 10w30 a bit?)
