post your latest differential fluid change

Finished the front diff and now the rear diff. 2008 Chev Suburban 3/4 ton with 260,000 miles. The pumpkin looks grimy because I spray it with Krown.

Out Motomaster 75W90.
In Pennzoil 2.75 quarts 75W90

The axle is a 14 bolt 10.5 inch GM. The cover came off cleanly. The Felpro gasket was attached to the cover with Permatex High Tack. It was on solidly. I had to scrape some of the gasket off then sprayed the gasket with Permatex gasket remover, letting it soak for an hour. It totally weakened the gasket and it scraped off easily. I then sprayed the dried High Tack and it totally dissolved it making it possible to wipe it off. Permatex gasket remover is very good stuff and can also be used to remove your finger prints. Use gloves.

The magnet had a bit of debris but not as bad as 5 years ago when I was towing.

I used some High Tack to stick the gasket to the cover to the gasket again and the gasket stayed in place while I maneuvered the cover in place. The brackets at the top were a bit of a PITA due to the stiff brakes lines attached to the brackets.

A few tips:

- make sure to clean the area above the pumpkin where the brackets are because that area will be full of road grime caught by the brackets,

- as soon as the cover is off, place some paper towels or rags over top the gears to keep dirt out.

- I might invest in one of those reusable gaskets to save time cleaning the paper Felpro gasket off.

- be careful when backing out the bolts holding the brackets. The brackets have side loads on them from the stiff brake lines and can induce stripping of the threads. Take your time.

- make sure to replace the magnet before buttoning up.

Enjoy the photos.

Your maintenance program is working well. That differential looks great inside.

I removed the cover from the 9.5” differential in my suburban last summer and it looked nothing like yours. The oil looked more like crude oil than gear oil, and the magnet was 3x the normal size because of all the metallic goop on it.

2013 NISSAN ARMADA PLATINUM 297,000 KM
Looked like OEM gear oil in rear dif, had it changed out with oil and other filters- used DELO HD Synthetic 75-90. Mechanic said there was signs of silver glitter in oil leaving. These crate have a rep for weak gear set in rear, it doesn't see a lot of km but it does pull our bumper pull rv in summer. Hopefully the synthetic shear will delay failure.

Not a change but reports of 2024 2500HD and up trucks having low fluid from the factory. Mine was a quart and a half low! Used Valvoline full synthetic 75w-90. Everything else was full

My '21 Ram 2500 was the same way, the rear axle fluid level was down about 1" at delivery.

Personal truck
2002 2500HD 6.0L LQ4 236500 miles
in service 3 years don’t remember the mileage

out: 3.5 quarts Carquest 75w-90 synthetic

in: 3.5 quarts HPL Differential life 75w-110

will do the front when my helicoil arrives. shop that did the gears stretched the drain plug threads and i don’t want to disturb it anymore until i can fix them.
