Post your latest brake job

I got the Bendix P1 Copper-Free last time for like $30, the ones going on the ML in the pic. Yes, it was a pad slap, dealership Textars were at like 40%

They are basically SOTA newest formula. I have these, Wagner TQ / OEx, EBC Ultimax, Pagid all running around on different cars now. The Bendix are a nice surprise. I descend Red Rock Mountain every week or two, so I get a keen sense of what's going on with them. You need a strategy to get down the mountain...

2017 Outback 79k
Did a pad and rotor replacement front and Back about a year ago 15k miles with Raybestos E3 pads and Centeic rotors. I developed a very loud squeak at any speed with hitting the brakes. Had the rotors turned and put on Duralast gold pads. Also found one of the front caliper pins was really tight.

Lexus GX460

Out: Factory oem rotors and pads
In: Powerstop Z36 rotors and pads
Brake flush soon with ST DOT 3.

On the 911 -

After market Textar pads and Balo coated rotors looked good after 45k plus miles. Decided to hold off on installing new rotors and pads.

Did a much needed brake flush with Ate Gold DOT 4. Topped a lil with ST DOT 4 to bring to max line b/c I ran out of the Ate right as finishing up the flush. Moisture content was reading 2%, phoenix brake strip @ 10ppm copper. Think it’s the humidity in TX b/c I test frequently and never has it been higher than 1% moisture or any copper showing on test strip.

Gonna have to haul around new set of pads and rotors for the 911 that has been sitting in my garage a while now. Maybe Ill do it anyway when I’m feeling bored. And possibly order new brake fluid reservoir cap just in case. Also cleaned the inside wheel barrels while tires were off. Looks so much nicer now.

Done two brake jobs today. Pads and rotors on a Tacoma. And pads and rotors on a Highlander. I absolutely hate installing Toyota pads because they are too cheap to include new hardware and shims with the pads so you have to transfer it over which is pointless and bad because it does wear out. That’s why I always hope we are out of stock and have to get them from the store lol. The rotors today were too bad to machine so that’s why I sold rotors.

I reused the Lexus hardware. Something about the Powerstop hardware kit felt different and not in a good way. I cleaned up the Lexus pins etc with brake cleaner, brass brush and lubed with the Powerstop brake grease.

2016 Subaru Forester...

Out: Element 3 front pads and rotors.
In: Wagner OEX (?) pads and Wagner painted rotors from Rock Auto.

Have a few hundred miles on the Wagner pads. Car stops fine; no noise.

The wrong hardware came with the Wagners so cleaned up and used the old hardware.

Can't recommend new hardware? Can't be that much more money, right?

Our GS350 F Sport is notorious for brake squealing like a pig. The Advics Lexus pads worked for me and the fitment was amazing.
The OE Textar pads have great bite but the squeal is horrid.

I’ve never had squeal on Oem or aftermarket. I use the grease or aftermarket (crc) disc brake quiet on metal shims and where posts touch hardware. I didn’t need the lexus shims b/c powerstop pads had integrated ones on the new pads. I’ll keep the oem shims though in case I change pads in future that need them….

The powerstop z36 are combo ceramic iirc and lexus oem semi metallic i think.

I can’t wait to put some miles on the powerstop pads. They feel so much better than oem setup. The gx is a heavy suv afterall. Braking never inspired confidence. As pads wore it became worse especially in wet weather or quick stops.

The balo rotors and textar pads were oem suppliers to Porsche and have always felt solid.

The boss will pay me a visit if I do lol. Unless it is damaged, but also we aren’t allowed to stock the hardware either just like we can only stock rotors for Tacomas, Camry and Highlanders. Toyota has very strict standards as far as parts inventory goes and it’s based on the size of the dealership and the types of cars that come thru the most. The hardware/shims are $60 customers price. They are about $35 employees cost.

Wow that's crazy. I paid like $12 for the Lexus shims at a local dealership. If I remember correctly, that is. But I'm sure it wasn't $60 or even $35.

Yeah it’s insane. That’s for the hardware clips and the shims $60 and always special order as not allowed to stock so minimum 1 day wait if it’s ordered before 3pm. If after that 2 day wait. I disagree with Toyota and their parts inventory policy but it is what it is. When I was going to get Toyota pads for one of our Camry they gave me the $35 price for the shims and clips I was like nope order me some Napa or AutoZone that includes it like it should.

I think that must be regional pricing. Silicon Valley has sooooo many car dealerships; there are at least 10 Toyota dealerships within about 25 miles from me and at least 5 within 10 miles.

There is generally no need to replace genuine Toyota brake hardware, at least not out here.

Dealers only stock what sells; all brands have the same inventory management policy.

Our Toyota rep was telling us about how Toyota requires to do parts so I don’t know. The way Toyota is about things it would not surprise me if it was true how he said. But I just know on my cars the brake hardware is getting replaced each time. I hate not being able to replace it on customer cars. It feels dishonest.

As far as I know Toyota is the only brand that does that and that’s really the only thing that gets on my nerves that and parts delays but that’s besides the point.

And sometimes the shims are missing for a previous job.
Interestingly, our GS350 F Sport is notorious for horrible brake squeal. A new set of shims was released as part of the fix.
The OE pads on my car are Textar, which are found on many Porsches; the recall fix pads are Advics and much cheaper.

Yes I see them missing quite frequently and that red stop squeal goo all over them. Also one reason to not reuse is that the grease that Toyota provides hardens like glue and you have to pry the shims off and they usually bend when that happens. That’s why I started using the green or purple Permatex grease.

2017 F150

Off: Factory Pads, Rotors, Fluid
On Front: Bosch Semi Met HD & Bosch Coated Rotors
On Rear: Bosch Ceramic & Bosch Coated Rotors
Fluid: Motorcraft Dot4

Fluid Came out green, I'm glad I decided to flush it. The pads fit perfectly with no ear filing. New pin seals and bushings all around.

Why didn’t you use semi-metallic all around?
