Possibly getting rid of the CX-50

Out of curiosity, at what point would you call it quits on a vehicle? I'm currently in a dilemma, I have a 2023 Mazda CX-50 that has been having more problems than one would expect with a 2.5 year old car and only ~38k miles. It is currently in the shop for a low oil pressure issue. TBD if its actually low or just a software/sensor issue as when I would restart the vehicle it would go away.

Problems so far:
- Viscous Coupler Replaced at ~17k miles
- Steering hangup/noise at 34k miles, pretty minor happens mostly in the cold and the dealer was unable to replicate. But could definitely turn into an issue in the future.
- Complete Engine Reseal at ~36.8k miles. The valve cover, timing cover and oil pan were all leaking. So the dealer fixed all those leaks.
- ~37.6k miles, noticed a water stain/leak in the headliner, dealer was unable to replicate the leak. Could be concerning into the future. I was able to replicate it when I first noticed it but hasn't reappeared lately.
- Today, ~37.8k miles, low oil pressure light and check engine light came on while I was driving to work. Luckily it happened near a Mazda dealer so after I check the car for leaks and oil level, I turned it back on and the low oil pressure light was off. So I made it to the dealer and they took at look at it and couldn't find anything obviously wrong. They wanted me to go back to the my regular dealer that did the engine reseal. So off I went on the 45min drive to my regular dealer, on the way there the oil pressure light came on again about 30mins into the drive. So turned the car off and back on again and the oil pressure light stayed off the rest of the drive.

So at what point would you get rid of a vehicle? Like, I feel like if I keep this vehicle, it is just gonna cause more headaches at this point. So I'm debating about trading it in while its still pretty new for something different
Thats too bad , usually Mazdas are pretty reliable these days and I like them because you cant still get a normally aspirated engine(non turbo) and a normal transmission not a CVT .

That’s part of why I bought it. It is generally a proven powertrain. I just haven’t had good luck with it.

Out of curiosity, we’re all these repairs covered under Mazda’s warranty?
Everything the dealer has been able to replicate has been fixed so far. The sunroof leak and steering wheel squeak/catch haven’t been fixed but they are also intermittent issue and I haven’t been able to replicate for the dealer.

I dumped my Volvo C40 P8 when the dealer said that drivetrain vibration into the steering wheel was just a characteristic of the car, and all of them on the lot did it. I don't have time for trash in my life. It's too short for that. I literally ordered a replacement car a couple weeks after they said that. So far it's been a great nearly 3 years with my EV6 GT! 0 Regrets except buying a Chinese car to begin with. The quality isn't there in their cars.

Yeah, but the CX50 isn't a real Mazda. It's made in Alabama for the US market, so all the reliability and quality you're used to from prior CX platforms doesn't apply. The CX5 is rated at 74 and the CX50 at 47 for reliability by CR.

Does your state have lemon laws? It might be worth looking into. If you do, maybe even mentioning that you're thinking of filing a claim may inspire your dealer to negotiate a good deal on a new vehicle. I've had 8 mazdas and none have had any of the issues yours has. My current 25 3 ( 2 months old) and 25 cx30 (10 months old) have both been super so far . They booth exhibit many good ole ZoomZoom traits. I had 2 CX5's (16 & 21) and both were absolutely trouble free (kept each for 5 years). My 14 6 and 18 3 were trouble free as well and were 2 of my favorite cars that I've ever owned. Your CX50 is very much an exception and Mazda should be offering you solutions!

Sounds like the headache that my Durango was. I sold it after 4 years and a yearly $1,000+ fix… bought a 300 which I’d still have if not for moving into the snow belt.

Edit - 1st model year? Definitely ditch it. My Durango was a 2011, also a 1st model year.

A few years ago, my wife and I gave our CR-V to our daughter and bought a new Audi Q5 Prestige. In the first year, a recall came out related to the bottom end of the engine. The dealer did the prescribed test and it "passed". Fast forward to a few months ago when a second recall came out related to the top end of the engine. My wife and I are entering retirement and this was our only car. I was starting to worry about whether the car would be worth keeping for the long term. It was still under warranty, but knew it wasn't, so we got rid of it and bought a Honda Pilot Elite, because it's a much simpler vehicle. No turbo, DCT, and all the other fancy bells and whistles. Bought a HondaCare extended warranty which covers everything for many miles and years. I'm sleeping much better at night.

Sounds like you're already losing sleep over it. Been there, done that. The feeling is only going to get worse.

Lemon laws don't work on a car that is almost 3 years old.

Right now my plan is to keep the vehicle. The financial cards got reshuffled when my wife and I found out we are expecting twins. With the car already being paid off, it doesn't feel like a sound financial decision taking on a new car loan while also trying to pay for twins to be in daycare.

Congratulations! While I don’t have twins, I have done 2 under 2… twice. All boys.
Please send help they’re crazy

Yup....too stiff for me...
Wasn't there a poster on here that was having problems with his CX-90 and wanted to bail also?! Or was it an XC90? Mamma! LOL.

I am glad it's not just me with new car smell that turns into a new car stink! But sorry for your troubles when you dont need problems like that!

Thinking way back, to be safe in the early 70's a great choice was a Plymouth Scamp with the slant six and three on the tree. I'd happily take one today in a New York Minute ...

There’s a current thread on ‘simpler cars’ (less high tech) and I certainly would like to see more of them. The only ‘options’ I need are AC, simple radio w/ CD player, power windows and power door locks (for those times when I’m driving in bad neighborhoods). It’s a shame to get a lemon when you’re basically taking out a mortgage nowadays when buying a new car.

I would probably get rid of it too.
I herd real good things about mazda suv but there is always a lemon in every brand

A CX-50 isn’t a real Mazda? That’s absolute nonsense.

A CX-50 shares the same drivetrain and other components as a CX-5. The body style, rear suspension , and AWD programming may be different, but other than that,…it’s the same.

CR (Consumer Reports), what more needs to be said?

His problems? Teething pains from a new facility? A rare glitch in the matrix of reliability? Who knows?

It's made in America and not Japan. Hard pass

That’s your criteria?

Ok.
Yes, I wouldn't buy a US made car except for nostalgic purposes like my CVPI, and it has a ton of engineering issues that I'm working through. American cars are, frankly, pretty terrible. Even when they are designed in other countries and then built here. The workmanship just isn't there in this country at present in the automotive industry, and the engineering is pretty bad, as well. The only thing American cars get right are naturally aspirated V8's with port injection. Everything else has kindof been a dumpster fire.
