A carbon-monoxide detector that is on a circuit that will be active when the gen-set runs, or that is powered by a battery is almost a must have.

When I had my robin/subaru one cylinder unit, I'd exercise it once a month and do the whole stabil routine. Once I went to my 11kw kubota diesel, running it has become a bi-monthly routine, mostly just to keep the battery charged rather than worrying about the fuel or non-existant carb. Load testing became a yearly chore once I made the switch, mostly because it's not as easy with that kind of capacity-a space heater won't even change the tone of the engine. I've gotta break out two or three, and load on the garage lighting where it's planted to boot. The only way to really make mine break a sweat is to put on the central a/c in the middle of august.

I start up and run my little HF 2-stroker once every 3 or 4 months. I don't always put a load on it but occasionally I'll plug in a 200-watt drop light just to give it a load. About 30-min. of running then I shut off fuel supply to the carb and let it run dry.
No problems with it over the last 7-years and always starts right up.

I have a cheap 15 yr old Coleman 5 kw powered by a Tecumseh HM100. After losing power for 4 days, I got it running. I had to rebuild the carb and I added a shut off. I had thought I had blown the alternator up, but I just needed to reset the breakers. I used a dryer heating element to test it on 220. It sat for at least 6 yrs since it last ran. I should pull it out and try it.

Was at the Honda dealer where I ordered the Generator from on Saturday. Now I`m told it could take until May to get it!

I put a $200.00 deposit on the 6500kw back in November. They told me it would come in Feb or March at the latest. So I`m just going to stick it out and wait.
In michigan gasahol(e10) is mandated at the pump. I run my genny every 30 to 45 days. I start and run five minutes with 10% load to warm-up, and then run 50+%load til tank is dry (2hrs), top-off with fresh gas. oil used m1 truck&suv 5w30, changed every 50 hrs.
We don't have a genny, though I've been pestering my parents to get one for some time now, they won't do it until we own a house and can get a transfer switch installed. I've been thinking about picking up one of those 900watt "Sportsman" (chicago on HF) 2-stroke jobbies for emergencies.
We don't really have call to use them around here. National Grid does an excellent job keeping power up, and it's only when there are things like a tractor trailer crashing into a transformer, or a major ice storm, or severe thunderstorms, that we ever have any power outages. Occasionally we get short ones that last a minute to an hour or so, but anything longer than a minute is extremely uncommon.
