I ended up getting cold feet bidding on one of these. It went for approx $225.

Looked faded, and was missing the ign key the day of the auction. The day prior the key was in it, and i was able to start it. It started right up and the guage that is on the control panel did move up to the far right. So I assume it generated some kind of voltage. I got cold feet as I was not able to load test it, and with most of yamaha stuff, parts are very hard to find. Should I have reconsidered bidding more? Im not skilled with generator resale value when they are used.

With this being a twin, and rated for 12k, it is a bit big for my needs. Would it have been a gas guzzler at 1/4th to 1/3rd load?

Did you find any specs on it? I can't imagine it's fuel injected.

"Would it have been a gas guzzler at 1/4th to 1/3rd load?"

For the power output, definitely yes.

There's no page 44 but the generator doesn't look like anything fancy. I'm sure the key/switch can be swapped out or bypassed without much issue.

Oh the specs, right. Pg 36 in the manual / pg 44 of PDF.

Engine EH65D

That's a carbureted Robin / Subaru engine. I'm sure it's fine but no more efficient than any other modern carb'd v-twin.

So yes, if it was going to be a gas guzzler, I am not as mad I missed it. Would have been a neat engine to have but the one I bought instead get 12 hours of runtime at 8 gallons which is still pretty bad.

If you want efficiency, get a quality brand unit, hopefully fuel injected, with an inverter generator. All of that is going to drive up the price substantiality and be more complicated / expensive to fix, generally.

Fundamentally, you should pick a generator that has 10-20 extra capacity, not 50-300%. If you need 4800w of output, shop for something in the 5-6kW range.

I agree with fuel efficiency, because in an elongated outage the gas stations dont pump either.

1 cylinder engines tend to have an efficiency edge over the twins, though the twins seem cooler.

I’d love to take an opposed twin marine onan and set that up as a standby, also recognizing it would be a labor of love and questionable practical value. 1800 Rpm rocks.
