Poor gas mileage with shell gas, is this normal

Gas milage may not have as much to do with brands as with pump calibration. Since buying an 06 Denali, which shows fuel consumption, we have found pumps can vary as much as 3 gallons on a 20 gal fillup. Pumps at the same station vary. We keep track of which pumps give us the most accurate readings. We also watch calibration dates on the pumps, as pumps in our area can go 3yrs between calibration. We noticed a big improvement at one station after their pumps were calibrated last Dec. There is an allowable error as specified in state laws. We feel we have found a good pump if it shows no more than 1 gal more than our trip computer on a 20 gal fill.

Hello,

I stopped using Shell because it sucks. I don't trust the pakistani owners either. Can you tell me how to check pumps and monitor all the stuff you mentioned? My Chevron station closest to me closed and I am using another Chevron down the road. I see at the top of the hose there is a metal shaft thing and a white sticker on it. Is this what I read to find out when it was calibrated?

Thanks. Anyone who knows that can answer, please help.

I just happened to be at the gas station the other day when the weights and measures guy was there. he said the error in the amount of fuel dispensed is less then 1 oz per gallon, that's 0.8% error max. he also said with the new electronic pumps they are rarely off much at all.

there could be a difference in the sensitivity to what triggers the pump to shut off when full. that would give you the difference in fillups and differences in calculated MPG.
