Poll: Nitrile or silicon rubber better for ADBV?

Silicone, as said majority high end filters use it for it's durability and flexiblity over longer oci's and temperature extremes, especially cold. That said, I've used filters with nitrile for 5-6k oci's and had plenty of oil left in the filters after sitting base down for a week.

And, some vehicles seem more susceptible to start up rattle and seem to function better (no start up rattle) over the length of the oci with a silicone adbv.
 
If I have my druthers I'll take the silicone...but I have used countless nitrile filters without any real issue either, even in winter, so I don't consider it a deal breaker by any means.
 
I just opened up a bunch of old filters I had stored hole side down for periods ranging from six months to more than a year. They all had silicone ADBVs and they all were still holding oil inside. Here in the Northeast we do occasionally have to start up at 20 below zero or colder, and anything to make it easier on the engine in those conditions is welcomed.
 
Can nitrile be made to have properties close to that of silicone? I am not sure if we have any rubber or silicone specialists here....
 
Nitrile rubber is good for combo adbv/Anti-Return. The shape of the anti-Return is more inportant. Saw some so flimsy i wonder how it prevent oil from returning in the engine

Wiki has a good article on nitrile, all kinds are made, all is synthetic, not natural. If it is good depends on who makes it. I left a Toyota filter outside for two years and it had run about 7k when taken off. When I opened the filter and cleaned the black adbv off, it looked like a new one. I put it in the freezer and it was still perfectly flexible. It was so good it still stuck to the baseplate with a suction like a new one. It could be the Toyota valve isn't nitrile, can't judge a book by it's cover.
 
Usually (but not always) filters with silicone adbv's are also using a higher efficiency and quality media than filters with nitrile adbv's. So my preference is the better filter media which always comes with a silicone adbv.

That said I used AC Delco filters (old style, not e-core) for years that all featured nitrile adbv's and never had an issue.
 
Saw 2 Nitrile adbv i would never use . Both were made by toyota.oh they flexed alright. they probably adbv well but in hand they felt flimsy (durability wise they werent a problem . But my feeling didnt like them. even tho they probably were the sweet spot for the job at hand

Real deal surprising true story... When I pulled my last Fram Ultra 4967 off my lady's Camry it had no oil come out of it. The times before it had oil leak out because it's base plate is face down... So it had made a mess when taken off before. It had only been 10k miles. Do I still believe in how good Fram Ultras are?? Yeah absolutely. Not everything is 100% all the time. Just surprised me a good bit.

I recently cut open a couple of Ultras (XG2) that had been sitting in coffee cans hole side down for a minimum of six months and one for probably 12 months. They were both full of oil when cut open and the ADBVs (red ones) were very pliable. I have had the same experience with PureOnes, but also MOtorcraft Fl1As, which have a black and I assume nitrile ADBV. I would be more worried about performance in cold conditions. As an experiment, put a couple in the freezer and see how they feel.

When shutting down an engine, the ADBV will be substantially warmed then -40, and if it is -40 or colder outside, it should simply stiffen up in the shape it's in (keeping the seal). Given that I'm from an era when an ABDV was uncommon, I'm happy to have any.

I think the main concern was combo ADBV/bypass valves made out of nitrile, and that they might not flex very well at very cold temperatures for the right bypassing function at cold start-ups.
