1. M1/K&N/RP/Amsoil
For anything at 10k miles or more, this is also for the overkill fans.
2. Wix/Napa Gold, PureONE, Fram Xtended Guard, Bosch Distance+
IMO, the above aren't on the best of list, but aren't far behind either.
3. Motorcraft, Purolator Classic, Bosch Premium
Solid 3k mile oil filters. Wouldn't use them past 5k. No worries of 'minimal' needs being met, good construction for most P/Ns.
4. The rest.

the best oil filter you can buy is amsoil made by donaldson. filters to 15 microns absolute. Most only filter down to 30 microns or so.

Same company built both canisters. Anyway, He probably had a stuck OP regulator that cleared. The cans don't usually split by themselves.

For me, it certainly depends on the application and prices. For the old F-150, the Wix or Motorcraft are my favourites. The Wix is a buck cheaper than the Fram and the Motorcraft a buck more. From a construction standpoint, both are "better."
For my Audi, the Wix is about $9, whereas the German Bosch, Mann, and Mahle can all be had for around $5. So, the OEM filters are far cheaper than anything else readily available out there, and with known, quality construction.

Motorcraft is every ones favorite, and mines too? Or you can always go with WIX I haven't try one but it looks good.
Any filter will do 5K.
Most filters can probably do 10K.
Some car makers allow a filter to be run for two oil changes, or 15-20K by their own OCI recommendations.
At regular price, the K&N and the Mobil 1 oil filters seem like a waste of money.
As part of an oil change special, though, they can be a deal.

I knew they 'looked' identical, but didn't know they filtered the same? Are the specs the same???

i know many of those modular engines will blow off filters if a heavy oil is used in the winter just ask the guys that service the N.Y. State Police they will tell you

If you view river_rats bench testing, based on his testing they are, with exception of the P1's color/texture can, the same. Also, have the same efficiency rating , 99.9%. The BP's are just more difficult to find with the P1's promo pricing at AAP and Kmart.
