Trying to replace plugs/wires on a 2001 Grand Prix, but the old wires are totally stuck on the plugs, like they're welded on. To complicate things, the boots are inside these metal heat shield things that GM uses (my other car has the same thing), so I can't put a vice grip on the boot without crushing the shield, which no doubt is a highly expensive dealer only item (it's just a metal tube the boots fits into). Car has about 90K miles, I'm pretty sure the plugs/wires are original. Is there any trick to blasting the wires free?

I had the same issue on my dads 02 Suburban, and it also had the little heat shields on them. I ended up pulling on the wires with all my strength and destroying them.
Buy a set of wires just in case. From experience if they take a lot of force to take out, they eventually give but leave the metal conductor broken attached to the spark plug. True for most gm with wires, the fun begins once you start trying to pull from bank closest to firewall on a 6 cyl front wheel drive

If you pull on that heat shield instead of the boot it will push the the boot off from the back side. This works much better than pulling and even better than twisting. When it works, which is most of the time, it's tremendously easy. If it doesn't come off that way, well, you weren't going to get that boot off intact anyway.
