I got one of these cheap tire repair kits from wal mart and the tool keeps pulling the plug back out when removing it. I took a flat head screw driver, inserted it into the slot and opened it up a tad. Works great now. 👍 Not sure if anyone else has this issue, but figured I'd leave this tip. Yoy can see in the Pic how it's opened up a tad now vs totally closed before.

I think you may not be pulling the tool out fast enough. That's why the tool snags the plug. Do it really fast like you would a Band-Aid.

I'm sure I have 2 or 3 of these laying around that I can never find. Pretty sure that's the first one I've seen closed up all the way like that.
The insertion tools that come in cheap kits with plugs tend to be poorly made. You can buy higher quality insertion tools that work much better and that have also a more comfortable grip. The same thing goes for the reaming tool.

Looks to me to be the near 90 degree corner on the inside of the eye. File that fella to round and fire for effect.

Yeah it didn't take much to spread it apart. Made out of pot metal. I'm surprised it doesn't just break off trying to push it in. I've heard about the plastic handles breaking and the whole thing goes through your hand, but I don't see it too unfeasble for the metal part to break too.

All the cheap one I have seen were low-grade steel. Pot metal would be way too soft and brittle as it's usually a zinc-tin-aluminum, etc alloy like ZAMAK. It's a very low-melt alloy used for cheap die cast parts and things like toy cars.

I’ve used this type of tool a bunch of times and I don’t recall the plug wanting to come back out when extracting the tool. However, I always used the accompanying cement and I think it has lubrication qualities too which allows the cord to release easier. Besides, don’t they recommend some sort of twist prior to extraction? I’ve experienced the blade coming out bent because of the above practice but plug always retain within the puncture.
