Quick (dumb) question. Was at HD yesterday to pick up a new quadra-cut blade for my HRR216 (what a FANTASTIC difference that made) and I was considering picking up a new OEM plug but don't have a gauge to check the gap so I didn't get it. I know gauges are cheap and readily available but they didn't have one at HD and I don't go by the auto parts store regularly. It would make sense to me that the OEM plugs should have a proper gap in the package; is that a bad assumption?

I think you can safely assume that its close enough. I check gaps for my car plugs and its rare that one needs any significant adjustment. I was surprised that they seemed to be made to the gap spec for my cars.

If it really is an OEM plug, it is probably pre-gapped, likely to have been made by NGK.

If you stopped by a parts store on your way home they would probably let you use a gapping tool if you ask nicely, even if you didn't buy the plug from them.

Go out and buy a wire-type spark plug gauge. They are inexpensive, and infinitely valuable.

Spark plugs do start out life pre-gapped. But by the time they get dropped by the wholesaler/distributor/trucker/parts guy, they may or may not be where they are supposed to be.

Always, always, check gap before installation.

The correct plug is a non-platinum, non-iridium, NGK. It's a BPR5ES if I recall correctly (my two Honda mowers take the same plug). The plug box itself doesn't advertise that it's pre-gapped, but the gap has always been correct on new ones I have bought. I forget the gap spec at the moment; I believe it's either .030" or .044".

I wouldn't sweat the gap too much, but if you've got the spec and feeler gauge on hand, why not check it.
