Browsing FB marketplace. Always looking for interesting mowers. A guy had an HRC216 for $125. Says it runs but self propel doesn't work. I offered $100. Said what the hey. He accepted so I picked it up. Looks terrible but it's runs. Self propel does not work. Blade clutch works. It's started up on one pull. I do have a brand new in box hydrostatic for my newer HRC that might work for this if I can't get it going. Just a little project. If anything it could be a spare engine. Engine oil looked ok so it's been changed at some point. I'm letting it run the gas out now. Not sure what's in there.

Awesome! That's an oldie, but a goodie! I'd check those "oiled for life" rear axle bushings. They will get to the point they lock up so tight due to corrosion and debris, they put so much drag on the axle/hydrostat that it will burn the hydrostat up. You can clean and re-oil the bushings if they're not too bad.

Nice pickup!

What's with all the dents in the deck? Someone mowing over gravel?

Those HRC's have the nice air cleaner. The homeowner version Honda mowers use a small paper filter.

Check the cable adjustment on the drive and make sure the belt hasn't slipped off the hydrostat pulley. It's super common as engagement involves rotating the transmission to engage the belt. Check the bushings as @JTK recommended. They do get corroded easily Might be an easy fix. Nice old Commercial unit.

Looks like the transmission has been leaking. It's filthy. The cable adjustment looks off too. I gotta dive into it after I get some seals for it. Also one of the wheel bolts is stuck so hopefully the threads on the shaft aren't messed up. If I can get the transmission to work and the BBC figured out. It works but makes a bang when it disengages I'll probably order up a new deck for it. This one is garbage

these are shaft drive

Just a little update. The transmission works. The blade clutch is jacked up. It works but the spring is broken in the middle and the plate with the pins has wallowed out the plate that the pins go into destroying both. This is now a full resto project. I have a new deck with new scrolls. All new hardware. New bearings for the wheels. New seals for the transmission shafts. I stripped the paint on the handlebars and repainted yesterday. Have a few pieces to paint and then I start assembly of the mower again. Its a slow process. Its gonna look good though.
