Hello all. We have a 2005 Ford Focus Wagon that is used for our work, the car has 57K miles on it.

We recently got the Front wheel Bearings, Rotors, pads and Rear wheel bearings, Drums and Shoes changed and since then the ABS, Traction and Hand brake lights are constantly On. I have tried to reset the computer by removing the -ve battery terminal but to no sucess. The local mechanic that did this job claims that these lights will turn off by themselves after a couple of days of driving (the job was done on Oct 14'05), or I will have to thake the car to a Ford dealership to have it reset.

Anyone know if these lights can be reset in an easy way or should we have the Ford dealer take a look at it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Any shop with a good code scanner should be able to read and reset those codes. Some auto stores, like AutoZone, will do it for free, but their scanners are limited to powertrain codes. ABS codes won't show. Make sure the shop tells you what those codes are, though. You want to know if it's something serious.

From my experiences, the handbrake warning light is a circuit that is invoked by contacts at the pivot point of the handbrake itself. Now, if the mechanic had it open to adjust the cabling, then it very well could have been placed incorrectly that the circuit stays closed.

On my truck, I got the front wheel bearings done as I sensed a bit of play in one of them (due to having 31" tires and doing a lot of off roading I suppose), and when just one was replaced, the ABS light came on and could not be reset. As soon as the other was replaced, the light went out and never has come back. Thus Id suspect that either two different bearing assemblies (granted they surely are much different from the ones on my 4wd truck) or connectors or sensor rings were used, either because they didnt do all of them, or they didnt do them right. FWIW, when I had just one bearing done, and then the light came on, I was told that it would go out with a few days of driving... but no dice.

And, for your case, I suspect that traction and ABS are interrelated systems, so when one faults, Id bet the other would too, particularly if its the ABS system that has the fault.

One way or another, the mechanic should be paying for and taking the time to have the light reset, as that's why you're paying them to do the work... When my shop did the one and the light came on, which didnt go away, despite them telling me that it would after driving, and then we determined that the other bearing needed to be replaced so the sensor set matched (sorry for the runon sentence), the shop only charged me for the part for the other side, and waived the labor, since they made a faulty assumption of the problem with the ABS and the solution.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Yeah, we only changed one of the front wheel bearings, so I will have the other side changed in the front as well and see if that helps.

I will be getting it changed over this coming weekend so if the lights reset between now and then because of driving that will be good. I will keep you guys posted.
